Springtime in Asylum Hill is in full-swing in the neighborhood. This is revealed by the activity in our community gardens and the many residents involved in planting and beautifying our neighborhood. We recently had about a dozen volunteers to plant a Pear Orchard at the Niles Street Community Garden.

Minimum wage workers are moving closer to a living wage. The House and Senate approved House Bill #5004 to increase the minimum wage incrementally over the next few years...to $15 in 2023.

Exploring Asylum Hill - 40 Ashley Street

By Bernie Michel

Michael Barr bought his home at 40 Ashley St about a year and a half ago, and since then has been busy making improvements, both to his property and to the community around him. He discovered AHNA early on and began attending their meetings and quickly found a place where his skills and interests could make things better. As a result, he is now a member of the Board of Directors of AHNA and has been chairing the newly revived Quality of Life Committee for the last few months.
Where we explore Mike's efforts is in the rebuilding of his garage in the back of his property.

Volunteer Of The Month -

Ofcs. Cid Palmieri and Jim Barrett

Asylum Hill has always been blessed with dedicated CSOs right from the beginning of the program. And it's hard to say what effort goes beyond their job description and into the realm of voluntary. But when Ofc. Cid Palmieri, our current CSO and Ofc. Jim Barrett a former Asylum Hill CSO joined with 10 other law enforcement officers from the Hartford area and took a week of vacation time to ride bicycles to Washington DC they qualified for Volunteer of the Month.

Caritas Pear Orchard

Since last month's News & Views invited everyone to join in, it seems only fair to follow up on the success of the pear tree planting. People began showing up even before 10:00 am, and it was especially reassuring to have Charmaine Craig, the long time "plant lady" from Knox there to oversee the project. As Angel Pena, the Knox Crew Supervisor put it, "she taught me everything I know about plants."
