Volunteer Opportunity:
AIDS Memorial Quilt Monitoring
August 2018;
The LGBTQ+ Exhibit at the San Diego History Center

As part of the LGBTQ+ SD exhibit at the San Diego History Center a 12x12 section of the AIDS quilt is on display. The individual panels are significant to San Diego and remember Jess Jessop, Brad Truax, Gary Rees, Diversionary Theater, Monte Kobey, Philip Dimitri Galas, David Mandell Jr. and Tim Pour. As part of the arrangement with The Names Project to display these quilts, the section is required to have a person to stay by and be present while the section is on display during the time the History Center is open to the public.

Duties include monitoring the AIDS Memorial Quilt area to ensure that visitors do not touch the quilt and eat or drink in the gallery. Sign up HERE.

CGS 123: Gender and Reproductive Politics

Take CGS 123 for Summer Session 2! This course will examine historical and contemporary debates around issues such as abortion, birth control, surrogacy, fetal testing, and assisted reproductive technologies. Topics include the essentialization of women as reproducers; the relationship between the corporeal body and body politics; the fight for abortion/birth control; eugenics and coerced sterilization of poor, women of color; reproductive health "rights" and "choices;" and the effects of structural violence and inhumane conditions on reproductive health.
CGS 122: Lady Avengers in Asian Cinema

Though action cinema tends to be thought of as an overwhelmingly masculine genre, this course takes up the figure of the "lady avenger," who shares a special association with Asian cinema. By pairing key films from across Asian cinema with feminist theory, this course investigates the stakes of these films' fantasies. We'll look to the sister of the femme fatale, the final girl, the bad girl, the violent girl, and the mean girl to question whether girls with guns-or more often in these films, swords-are feminists, asking: what can cinema avenge and for whom?
