BOARD NOTES AND NEWS
by Jeane Slone
I have been the chair of Author Launch for many years now and it is a favorite event for myself as well as the club members. Author Launch is a fun fast-paced event. Each author reads a five-minutes excerpt from his/her book. This year you will hear a variety of genres. At the break you can enjoy a piece of cake and buy a personally inscribed book. Autographed books make very special gifts!
Please join us and invite all your friends to celebrate Redwood Writers publishing accomplishments. This is a

An Ode to Sophie
by Sandy Koshari
Sophie died in her sleep last week.
I am grateful that she did not suffer.
But I miss her, terribly.
Weekly visits with Sophie were always precious.
My daughter Jennifer and I brought her carrots
hidden in a tool box of brushes and sprays.
Sophie loved carrots.
We walked down the hill towards her field
pretending we couldn't see her.
In loud sing-song voices we called:
“Sophie! So-phieee! Where
are
you?"
while she stared at us,
panting as she wound up her voice,
and then let loose with the most beautiful bray
that went on and on,
up and down, two to three octaves.
“Oh,
there
you are!” we would say,
acting surprised. She knew we weren’t.
When she was brushed her head dropped down,
her mouth opened
and her lower lip flapped in rapture.
Sophie, of course, was a donkey.
The very best.
