Message from the Brandon Planning Commission

Event: Jun 3, 2019, 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Come Join Us for a Conversation on Updating                           Brandon's  Flood Hazard Regulations.
The Brandon Planning Commission is updating the town's flood regulations and you're invited to an informational meeting on June 3, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the Brandon Town Hall (upstairs). Come join your neighbors and the Planning Commission to discuss the new regulations, which are designed to protect Brandon from future, flood-related damages.
As we are all aware, flooding in Brandon has been costly. On July 1, 2017, for example, the town suffered $529,000 in flood-related damages. Because our flood regulations were up-to-date in 2017, what the town paid for in disaster relief was about half of what it would have paid with more outdated regulations.
The town's share of that one flood's damages was $39,675. Had we not kept our town regulations current, we would've paid much more: a total of $66,125. Keeping everything current saved Brandon $26,450 in disaster spending.
Now, two years later, it's time to update the town's flood regulation again. At this meeting on June 3, we'll talk about how Brandon can be helped by these updated flood hazard and river corridor regulations and what these new protections will mean for future development.
All residents are encouraged to join us since this is an opportunity to share thoughts and learn more about the new protections. If you have any questions, please contact me, Michael Shank, at [email protected] or 802.247.4844.
Thanks so much!   Michael Shank-Chair, Brandon Planning Commission           Town of Brandon

Monica Rizzio, Texas bred and Cape Cod  washashore, sings Country at Brandon Music

Friday, June 14th at 7:30pm

Brandon Music is delighted to welcome back country singer-songwriter Monica Rizzio on Friday June 14 th at 7:30pm.  No stranger to the east coast music scene, Texas-bred and Cape Cod washashore. Monica Rizzio is fast becoming one of the finest singer songwriters that call New England home.  For over 10 years she played fiddle and sang with Tripping Lily, a folk acoustic pop band, who toured up and down the east coast.  Monica fondly regards Tripping Lily as her first musical family.

In 2012, Monica Rizzio left the band to rejuvenate her passion for music and began writing to help cope with the loss of the band and love. She purchased a 1956 Martin O-18, named it Bo, after her childhood horse and plugged in. For the next few years she started playing with a bunch of salty, accomplished Cape Cod musicians who helped bring back the cowgirl attitude and inspired her to write about her sometimes humorous, sometimes tear-jerking journey from Texas, love, and heartache. This led her to release her highly rated debut album Washashore Cowgirl, an extremely autobiographical album in 2014.  Now Monica has just released a new album, Sunshine Is Free which has a clear Nashville sound, was written in Nashville, recorded in Nashville and produced there too.

Monica Rizzio is a most talented multi-instrumentalist - an accomplished guitarist, originally a flautist, she also plays violin, ukulele, mandolin and piano.  She has a compelling voice both rustic and refined that Mark Erelli, American singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist  describes as,

Monica Rizzio is definitely on a journey to spread her music far and wide.

Concert begins at 7:30pm. Concert tickets are $20. A pre-concert dinner is available for $25. Reservations are required for dinner and recommended for the show.Venue is BYOB.

Stellaria Trio presents Pale Yellow - a program of piano trios at Brandon Music
Saturday, June 15 th

Only a short time ago Jim Lowe music critic and arts editor of The Times Argus and Rutland Herald wrote:
The Stellaria Trio has all the ingredients to become a fine ensemble of depth and musical refinement. It's already exciting - even stellar.

Since their inception, and now in their sixth season, the Stellaria Trio has enthralled Brandon Music audiences with their fine recitals of classical music.  The Stellaria Trio returns once again to Brandon Music on Saturday June 15th to present a compelling pairing of standard and contemporary repertoire.

The ensemble comprising violinist Letitia Quante, cellist John Dunlop, and pianist Claire Black will perform a captivating program titled Pale Yellow featuring Haydn's Piano Trio No. 45 in E-flat Major; Johannes Brahms' Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major; and a movement from Jennifer Higdon's Piano Trio, composed in 2003.

Cooie's Jazz Ensemble performs  jazz standards at Brandon Music

Saturday, June 22nd at 7:30pm

Brandon Music welcomes back the very popular Vermont singer, songwriter and guitarist Cooie DeFrancesco.   Frequently enjoyed as a solo performer, this time Cooie will be accompanied by her Jazz Ensemble,  made up of veteran musicians Robert Gagnon (guitar), Andy Smith (bass), and Rob Zollman (drums),

Cooie DeFrancesco has that special ability to reach the heart of a lyric and brings to it her own special blend of pathos and humor. Each song she performs showcases a true and melodic voice as well as her unique interpretive skills, using expressive vocal arrangements to take a lyric back to its foundation. Her beautiful and full voice is a joy to the soul and her passion for a song's meaning and spirit will evoke the same feelings in the listener. On June 22nd,  Cooie performs some of the very best of 20th century jazz classicsincluding  the unforgettable, 'All of Me', 'Cry Me A River', 'I'll Be Seeing You', 'As Time Goes By', 'All the Things You Are', 'Dream A Little Dream Of Me', and a special 'Route 66'   So for those who  love the jazz standards and enjoy listening to a beautiful, soulful voice reminiscent of Mama Cass or Mary Carpenter then this is the perfect concert.

Art of Wood: Brandon Artist Guild
Opens New Exhibit

The series will run from May 3
through June 25.

The Brandon Artists Guild (The BAG) continues its 20 th anniversary celebration with a  new exhibit, "The Art of Wood."

The show features pieces from the BAG's exhibiting members, who work in diverse media including paint, fiber, glass, ceramics, collage - and wood.  "Though the theme is wood, the exhibit will feature works and interpretations across all media," explains Stacey Stanhope, a potter and BAG board member. "Wood is just the sliver of an idea; each artist will branch off depending on how inspiration strikes. Wooden it be great to see what they come up with?"
The exhibit is the second in a series of four themed shows honoring our planet. This 20th-anniversary year for the BAG is also the Chinese Year of the Pig, which recognizes nature's elements, Earth, Wood, Water, and Fire.
The BAG is devoting four exhibits to these elements.
In addition to Art of Wood in May and June, the remaining exhibits are:
Art of Water - June 28 through August 27
Art of Fire - August 30 through October 29

The BAG, at 7 Center Street in Brandon, is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10AM to 5PM, and Sunday from 10AM to 4PM. Open seven days a week starting May 1. Information: 802 247-4956.      Brandon Artist Guild

Brandon Free Public Library Used Book Sale Season Begins
Opening for the season!!

The Friends of the Brandon Free Public Library used book sale opens for the season on Wednesday, May 15 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., every Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. until mid-October. This is probably the best organized and longest running used book sale in Vermont. In the basement of the Library you will find an amazing selection of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages at very low prices. This is probably the best organized and longest running used book sale in Vermont.

For the month of May; buy one book and get another one free - the free book must be of the same value as the one you buy or less. There are new books that came in over the winter which are now part of our collections. As a result, a good 'spring cleaning' has taken place, some older materials have been culled and there are many newer and different books on our shelves.

Books are arranged by type and subject. There is both hard-cover and paperback fiction, non-fiction of every description, and books for children, toddlers, and young adults. There are special sections devoted to gardening, cooking, how-to and do-it-yourself projects.

All of the income from this sale is given by the Friends for the purchase of books and other materials and to help underwrite special projects for the Library like the Summer Children's Program in July. The Book Sale and the Holiday Auction are the primary sources for funding for these programs. The construction has impacted our sales and we depend on our neighbors and friends for their support for all the wonderful things that happen at our Library.

We can use more volunteers to fully staff this important fundraising project. If you have time Wednesday evenings or on Friday or Saturday, sign up to work. No experience is necessary and you may volunteer for as many or as few days as you'd like or you may sign up as a substitute. Training will be provided. Volunteer and find out what the 'oldest, continuing, permanent, used book sale in Vermont' is all about. Call the Library at 247-8230 for more information or to volunteer. Bring a friend if you'd like to work with a 'buddy'.

Sprinkler System installations
Significant tax savings available!

Dunmore Hose Company safety officer Dennis Reisenweaver brings to our attention the following information on sprinkler system tax savings applicable to many of our businesses!

In August 2018 Congress passed federal tax reform legislation (P.L.115-97) that contains significant federal tax incentives for business owners to install fire sprinkler systems in existing buildings. This could save you a lot of money!
Qualified commercial buildings located in state designated downtowns or village centers may be eligible for additional state tax incentives for sprinklers and other code and building improvements. OPERA at-a-glance: the latest exhibit at the Compass Music and Arts Center
Did you know that opera singers are basically Olympic athletes?
An opera singer has to be able to sustain high notes over a long period of time while using their body to amplify a sound so that it can be heard over a full orchestra and do so without any microphones. Opera singers show us the loudest sounds and the highest pitches the human body can produce. It takes many years before someone can audition to be cast in a professional company. This is one of the facts you can discover by visiting the 'Opera at-a-glance' exhibit in the Compass Music and Arts Center.

The Center is also providing a listening room where visitors can relax and sample different operas and hear the astounding voices of such great opera singers as Luciano Pavarotti and Renée Fleming.

The history of recorded sound is a further strength of the Compass Center as it hosts the Phonograph Rooms. Part of the exhibit will be devoted to how recording helped to popularize opera for all to enjoy.

The Compass Center is celebrating the world of opera with this exhibit to launch the  collaboration between the Compass Music and Arts Foundation and BARN OPERA and its founder and artistic director Josh Collier who is an internationally acclaimed opera singer.
The Foundation, through the new BARN OPERA venture, is organizing performances of loved operas through 2018 and beyond.

The Compass Music and Arts Center is located in Park Village at 333 Jones Dr. Brandon VT, 05733 (Park Village used to be the Brandon Training School, located 1.5 miles north of   downtown Brandon off Arnold District Rd.).

This is why we love the Brandon area, and the folks who make up our Chamber of Commerce!
Many thanks to Greg Smela of
" Simple Systems of Vermont", a locally owned tech company. Greg will provide free online tech support for BACC members via an online support forum.

How does it work?

Easy! Current BACC members can sign up at www.ssvt.net/bacc. You'll be prompted to create an account by entering your name, email address, company/organization name and phone number. Your account will be activated within a few hours and you'll receive instructions at the email address you provide.

What do you get? Simple... free support. That means, if you have a computer or other tech-related question you can post it in the forum and expect to receive an answer generally within 24 hours (but most likely much sooner). What kind of support is provided? We'll assist with hardware and software support and advice. Are you having a problem deciding on what hardware might work for your business or what software application will do the job? Post away and we'll help you.
What isn't covered: Telephone or email support. We can't answer your individual questions by email or phone as we are a business too and need to earn our keep! We also can't help your Aunt Ida or your friends, kids, pets, etc., but we hope this free service will help you deal with the small problems you may face from day to day.

We ask that you limit participation to one account per BACC membership. We are providing this for current BACC members as a way to help support our wonderful Brandon community.
