October is Substance Use Prevention Month
"Compassion." -Traditional I
ñ
upiat Value
October is National Substance Use Prevention Month, a time to highlight the vital role of prevention and to remember those who have lost their lives to substance use.
People from all walks of life use substances, and most without problematic use or harm. However, for some people substance use can become problematic and impact not only themselves, but also their families, communities and cultures. Substance use disorders (SUD) includes the use of alcohol, non-medical and medical prescription drugs, over-counter-medications, tobacco, marijuana, and illicit drugs (I.E., heroin and meth, to name a few). ANTHC has several programs available to help prevent SUD and resources for those who are impacted by substance use.

Ways to Prevent Substance Use
Harm reduction
is a set of strategies and interventions that seek to minimize harms related to substance use. Harm reduction helps keep individuals engaged in programs whether they are using substances or not. It is focused on: keeping people safe from injury and health problems when using substances (for example, Hepatitis and HIV), creating a variety of accessible treatment options, and supporting people on their healing journeys. Recovery is a life-long process, and harm reduction principles help support individuals and their families throughout this process. There are many harm reduction resources; for example, the use of Narcan® (naloxone) to prevent opioid overdose.

Talk About Your Medicines Month (TAYMM)
October is also TAYMM. TAYMM encourages conversations between patients and their health care providers about different types of medicines they may take, as well as knowing the health outcomes, possible side effects, benefits, potential risks, and how to dispose of and store medications. Safe disposal products help keep medicine out of reach from children and are safer for the environment than tossing pills in the garbage or flushing down the toilet. Order free Safe Medicine Disposal bags and buckets from IKM.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Alaska has among the highest rates of domestic violence in the world. Fifty-eight percent (nearly 6 out of 10) of Alaskan women have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) or sexual violence.
The
#1Thing community pledge
is about standing up to domestic violence and listening to survivors
. Domestic violence has never been a cultural value in Alaska, but o
ur collective power can inspire action to change our communities and to put an end to violence.
Check out the Domestic Violence Awareness Project website
for resources and to find out how you can participate in the
#1Thing campaign
.
October 16 is
Health Cares about DV Day (HCADV).
While health care providers routinely ask about high blood pressure and high cholesterol, too few consider domestic violence and its impact on health. Universal education provides an opportunity for people to make the connection between violence, poor health, substance use/misuse, mental health, and other related outcomes. See "Resources" section for a free domestic violence/sexual violence training in health care settings and other information.
