If you’re charting during the visit, it’s worth telling the patient that you’re working on their file. For example:
I’m just entering in some information about your health, but I’m listening too.
Using electronic medical records has become more common in the exam room. Because we equate eye contact with listening, however, patients may feel you are working on something else when you’re looking at a computer screen.
A simple statement like the one above can be especially helpful for elderly patients and those who may be less familiar with EMRs.
