MNPHA's Board of Directors currently has four directors up for re-election, and one vacancy.
Nominations for the Board of Directors are open, and will remain open up to seven days before the AGM. You are invited to send nominations by e-mail to the Nomination Committee at

- Organization (must be a housing provider member of MNPHA)
- A brief bio (1-2 sentences)
- A brief statement of interest (why you want to serve on the Board, 1-2 sentences)

Retrofit or build affordable housing units for higher energy performance with the Green Municipal Fund
The Sustainable Affordable Housing (SAH) initiative, recently launched by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' Green Municipal Fund (GMF), assists municipal providers, not-for-profit organizations, or housing co-ops with grants, loans and capacity-building opportunities. Whether you're just getting started or already have a project in the works, this funding will help communities across the country to reduce energy and GHG intensity, increase energy and housing affordability, improve building quality, while also increasing comfort, health and quality of life for residents.
Support throughout a project's lifecycle
Through the Green Municipal Fund, no matter what stage a project is at, funds and guidance are available:
- Planning grants: early support to get started on sustainable affordable housing initiatives.
- Studies: assess in detail how to implement your project, including technical evaluations, energy models, financial analysis, site assessments, stakeholder engagement and detailed project planning.
- Pilot projects: test out a new or unique approach.
- Retrofit capital projects: renovate existing residential buildings with installation of energy efficient technologies.
- New-build capital projects: construction of new highly energy efficient residential buildings.

The Canadian Housing and Renewal Association has shared its pandemic and post-pandemic vision for housing.
Specific calls from CHRA include:
- Finalize federal-provincial-territorial negotiations on the Canada Housing Benefit
- Implement a program to enable non- profit housing providers and municipal housing authorities to acquire properties for the purposes of affordable housing on a permanent basis
- Introduce and implement an urban, rural, and northern Indigenous housing strategy
- Make capital investments in affordable housing a key component of any post-pandemic stimulus policy

MNPHA Calls for Housing Sector to be Included in "Hero Pay" program and Economic Stimulus
In addition to our previous calls for financial support for tenants and housing providers, MNPHA wrote to Premier Pallister to call for:
1. Employees of non-profit housing organizations be included in the province's group of eligible workers for the Federal/Provincial wage subsidy, as keeping buildings clean, safe, and providing support for tenants to access resources are essential when all Manitobans are advised to stay home to stay safe.
2. The inclusion of affordable housing in the list of potential infrastructure projects that provide a high return on investment, eligible for provincial economic stimulus funding.

New this Month: Financial Resources for Housing Providers for COVID-19 Impacts
Emergency Community Support Fund
This new investment of $350 million will support charities and non-profit organizations that deliver essential services to vulnerable Canadians.
The investments flow through national organizations, including United Way Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, and the Community Foundations of Canada, to local community-based organizations that work with vulnerable populations, including seniors, persons with disabilities, members of LGBTQ2 communities, veterans, newcomers, women, children and youth, and members of Indigenous communities and racialized communities. Activities that will be funded include:
- increasing volunteer-based home deliveries of groceries and medications,
- providing transportation services, like accompanying or driving seniors or persons with disabilities to appointments,
- scaling up help lines that provide information and support,
- helping vulnerable Canadians access government benefits,
- providing training, supplies, and other required supports to volunteers so they can continue to make their invaluable contributions to the COVID-19 response, or
- replacing in-person, one-on-one contact and social gatherings with virtual contact through phone calls, texts, teleconferences, or the internet.
If you do not have charitable status, apply to the
Canadian Red Cross by July 7, 2020. If you are a registered charity, apply to the
Community Foundations of Canada by July 27 or the
United Way by July 31.
Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA)
Provides relief for small businesses experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19. It offers unsecured, forgivable loans to eligible commercial property owners to:
- reduce the rent owed by their impacted small business tenants
- meet operating expenses on commercial properties
Property owners must offer a minimum of a 75% rent reduction for the months of April, May and June 2020.
The loans will be forgiven if the mortgaged property owner agrees to reduce the small business tenants' rent by at least 75% under a rent forgiveness agreement, which will include a term not to evict the tenant while the agreement is in place. The small business tenant would cover the remainder, up to 25% of the rent. Applications are

June Picture of the Month: University of Winnipeg Renewal Corporation 2.0
UWCRC 2.0 is developing a new mixed-income residential building at 290 Colony street which is going to offer studio, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units.
The photo attached is a studio display suites that they are now pre-leasing for September 2020 occupancy.
The building will have 46 affordable suites in total.
Rent for a studio suite will be $685 inclusive of all utilities. They will be promoting Rent Assist for lower-income prospective tenants to qualify.
