E. L. Young Post 838, Commander Glaspie & Past Commander Chess
Passing the Gavel
It is a tradition of the American Legion that the past Commander passes the responsibilities of post business to the incoming Commander.
Past Commander Chess served for three consecutive terms and he was instrumental in many accomplishments during his tenure. Commander Chess lead the way in re-branding and bringing awareness to the aims and accomplishments of the American Legion. Although Past Commander Chess will no be serving as the 2019-2020 Commander, he will continue his service for our veterans, their families, community, and our youth.

Strategic Planning for Non-Profits and Hybrid Organizations
|
|
|
Starting with a Strategy
by: Sylvia Chess
The purpose of employing a strategy is to employ a concrete diagram that will allow the organization to flow. Within the American Legion Organization, in order to plan strategically, we must first identify any issues that we will face. Identifying strategic issues is the heart of the strategic planning process. A strategic issue is a fundamental policy question or challenge affecting an organization's mandates, mission and values, product or service level and mix, clients or users, cost, financing, organization, or management. The purpose of this is to identify the fundamental policy questions—the strategic issue agenda—facing the organization. The way these questions are framed can have a profound effect on the creation of ideas for strategic action and a winning coalition, along with the associated decisions that define what the organization is, what it does, and why it does it—and therefore on the organization's ability to create public value. If strategic planning is in part about the construction of a new social reality, then this step outlines the basic paths along which that drama might unfold (Bolman & Deal, 2013, 2014; Bryant, 2015).
The significance of applying this purpose to the American Legion is to fulfill our mission and produce measurable results for our veterans, their families, our community, and stakeholders.

To All Legionnaires and Auxiliary Members of Emanuel Young Post 838:
We are compiling a Member Directory of our Members for this post. We are requesting that EACH Legionnaire and EACH Auxiliary member submit their name, address, phone number, emergency contact, birthdate ( you do not have to include the year), and email address.
This information will be used to compile our Member Directory. As with the information, we are also requesting a RECENT photograph of EACH member, preferably with your cover (headgear). If you know of a member that has not been in attendance and remains in good standing and perhaps unable to send or take a photo, let us reach out to these buddies and maybe even make a visit to take the picture ourselves. Perhaps you know of a family member that can take a send a photo of our elder and missing buddies. Please reach out to them and have them take a picture of the Legionnaire and send it to our Auxiliary President.
The deadline for the photos and the information is August 3, 2019, at our regularly scheduled meeting. Our own Public Relations Officer, Sylvia Chess has agreed to take pictures, if those needing their photos taken and to develop and print our directory.
Each active member of the post should be represented in this directory. We want to put a face with the name of our buddies for any new member or the tenured members that are not familiar with our buddies.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a clarion call to get busy in helping us make this directory a success. Only we can make Emanuel Young 838 successful and only we can do it if we put forth the effort.
Any additional information can be obtained by contacting any Member at Large or 1st Vice or 2nd Vice Commanders. Their numbers are listed below
Thank you all in advance and let us make this directory the one by which all other directories are compared.
