Your May News & Updates
Welcome to the IDA, Oregon Branch monthly newsletter. Summer is almost here. We hope the April showers have made beautiful May flowers.
Update on ODE Dyslexia Legislation
Work on the implementation of Oregon Dyslexia laws related to screening for dyslexia and teacher training continues at a fast pace this spring.

In April, much attention was focused on amending the Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) to reflect 2017 legislative changes to the plan for universal screening for risk factors of dyslexia in kindergarten (and in grade 1 for students first enrolled in a public school in Oregon in grade 1).

Two particular issues were especially hot topics for discussion and compromise: when to screen for famiily history of reading
difficulty and how to document family history results.

The next few months will be dedicated to the topics of: guidance to districts from ODE on parental notification, a list of approved screening tests (early May), how to provide instructional support to students who demonstrate risk for reading difficulties, including dyslexia, and specific support of English learners.

Recommendations for Identifying Students Prone to Reading Challenges and Dyslexia

We identified this website from respected leaders in the field of Educational Neuroscience and Literacy Education, in association with the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, who have collaborated in an effort to disseminate information about science-based reading assessment and intervention.

In this October, 2017 video Dr. Nadine Gaab and Dr. Melissa Orkin present a 2 hour overview of the recommended screening and intervention process for young children entitled, How to Screen and Intervene: Preventing Reading Disabilities in K - 2 Through Screening and Intervention.
