OCMA UNVEILS PLANS FOR ITS NEW COSTA MESA HOME
Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) has unveiled plans for its new home at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. The 52,000 square foot building, designed by renowned architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, greatly expands the museum's space for exhibitions, public programming and community gathering. This week, OCMA will close the doors on its longtime home in Newport Beach (it has sold the property), and will aim for a 2019 groundbreaking on the empty lot adjacent to the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Projected opening of the new museum is 2021. More info here.
EMERGING ARTS LEADERS GATHER IN OC
Emerging Arts Leaders (EAL|OC) is RE-emerging! EAL|OC was founded in 2012 to cultivate and empower the next generation of leaders in Orange County's arts, culture, and creative industries. After a period of dormancy, a new wave of Next-Gen artists and arts leaders has come together, bringing new energy and ideas about its future. If you are interested in joining together with other next-gen arts and culture leaders, contact us. Seasoned arts leaders are invited to encourage their young and early-career staff members to participate. EAL has its own Facebook group, too. ArtsOC has fostered EAL|OC since the beginning, providing staff support for its coordination.
NEA & CAC APPEAR HEADED FOR FUNDING INCREASES IN 2019
At press time, the Appropriations Subcommittees of both houses of Congress had approved an increase in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts by $2 million for 2019, raising the funding level to $155 million. Full Congressional Committee and floor votes, as well as a Presidential signature on the full federal budget are still pending. More info here from Arts Action Fund.
The state Legislature's budget Conference Committee has approved a one-time $8.8 million increase in funding for the California Arts Council (CAC). Final floor votes and the Governor's signature are required. This increase would place the CAC at nearly $24 million, its highest funding in 16 years--but still below its $32 million peak. The lobbying effort is led by California Arts Advocates. Arts Orange County is active in efforts at the federal and state level on behalf of the entire OC arts community.
