"You absolutely cannot deal with prematurity unless you have that understanding that stress is a driver, chronic stress, constant, unremitting stress," Dr. Chip Morris explained during a forum on healthy birth outcomes in Milwaukee.

Morris provided an overview of how we can improve birth outcomes for babies in Milwaukee,
a special focus of the United Way
. Morris noted that while infant mortality has greatly decreased in the past century, disparities still exist in our community in 2018. Milwaukee’s African American babies are about three times as likely to die before their first birthday as Milwaukee’s Caucasian babies.

53206 Drug-Free Communities Project, is sponsoring this candidate forum before the August 14 primary election. Fred Royal, president of the Milwaukee Chapter of the NAACP, will moderate the forum at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, 2620 W. Center St., Milwaukee. A meet and greet will be held at 4:30 and the forum will begin at 5:30 p.m.

MCSAP International Overdose Awareness Day Event

Milwaukee County Substance Abuse Prevention (MCSAP) coalition is providing resources and outreach at
Washington Park Wednesdays on August 29, International Overdose Awareness Day. It's the final concert in this summer series and will feature the Diaspora Arkestra presented by James Julius Anderson and Tarik Moody. Plan to stop by Washington Park, 1859 N. 40th St., Milwaukee, between 5 and 8 p.m. on August 29.

Circles of Support Volunteer Training

The
Milwaukee Reentry Council is seeking volunteers for its new initiative, Circles of Support for formerly incarcerated individuals returning to the community. The circles will provide guidance, accountability, and healing for returning citizens who are embracing a new way of life. This volunteer training session will provide information on the benefits to and responsibilities of volunteers holding these circles for our community members.
