Palm Beach Town Council Addresses Environmental Issues

The Palm Beach Town Council passed unanimously the first reading of an ordinance that proposes a town-wide ban on fertilizers containing phosphorous and nitrogen during the rainy season - June 1 through September 30.
The council also passed the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers town-wide.
A 'Noah's Ark' Project for Corals: Scientists Race to Save Florida Reef from Killer Disease

On a sunny afternoon in Dania Beach, a dozen scientists unloaded crates full of corals from a dive boat and onto a pickup truck. They gently removed each piece from large tanks on the deck and placed them inside smaller containers, which were slowly taken onshore.
New Effort to Save Monarch Butterflies in Florida

Red Tide Threat Still Low, but State Finds More Signs in Latest Report

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recently observed low concentrations of the algae forming in the northwest and southwest coast of Florida, after the first sign of red tide algae were found two weeks ago. This is the first time they've detected background concentrations of Karenia brevis, the red tide causing phytoplankton organism, in the Northwest Florida region with two samples below 1,000 cells per liter collected from St. Joseph Bay-around 40 miles from Panama City Beach-in Gulf County.

If you walk by the Indian Road beach access path at the far North End of Palm Beach, you will see something that might seem peculiar - a rack of cobalt blue shopping baskets next to a large trash can. The baskets are part of a test program coordinated by the town and Friends of Palm Beach, the non-profit organization that works daily to clean litter from private beaches.

Developer Revives One Flagler Office Project at Downtown Waterfront

Two days before The Related Cos. hosted a public groundbreaking for its 360 Rosemary office tower this month, the firm quietly submitted plans to revive another more controversial project, One Flagler, a proposed 25-story, Class A office tower near the downtown waterfront.  The nearly 300,000-square-foot tower would rise at Flagler Drive and Okeechobee Boulevard, near the foot of the Royal Park Bridge, on a site recently upzoned from a five-story maximum in the new Okeechobee Business District (OBD).

The Palm Beach Symphony has a new music director - a conductor with seven Emmys, 14 Grammy nominations and countless other awards. He is the grandson of Holocaust victims and his first year at the symphony will shine a light on women and other historically underrepresented composers and musicians.

State Rep. Mike Caruso has told Palm Beach officials he shares their concerns about a state law that allows people to openly carry firearms if they also are carrying fishing poles -- even in an urban setting.
Palm Beach May Update Rules for Backup Generators

Hurricane season arrives Saturday, bringing with it the seasonal threat of storm damage and power loss. Residents without a backup generator may think of installing one so they know the lights will stay on. The town regulates the generators to control noise, fumes and aesthetics.

Safety officials in Palm Beach are back on the soapbox as a new hurricane season approaches. Their message: Prepare, prepare, prepare. A lot was learned during Hurricane Irma two years ago, and some of those lessons led to new programs and policies last year, which was relatively quiet in South Florida.

Lake Okeechobee dropped below 11 feet this week as a wet season dry spell persists and following efforts to lower water levels going into summer. At 10.99 feet on Tuesday, the lake is two feet below average for this time of year.
