Associate Principals' Message
Hello Dons!

The last few weeks have been full of AP Testing, spring sports, senior recognition, end-of-year concerts, preparations for finals, and excitement for summer. As we approach the last few days of the school year, it has been a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on our first year here as Dons. We have stated a multitude of times this school year and we are going to state it one more time: we are extremely honored and proud to be a part of this Dons community. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our students and staff, as well as the support we have received from our parent community. We wish our students the best of luck on their finals and sincerely hope you have a restful, relaxing, and well deserved summer break. We look forward to seeing you in the fall.

From Acalanes the Wellness Center
Best of luck to your students on finals! We are thrilled to see them head into summer or if they're seniors, on to the next phase of their lives. Summer brings a new, and hopefully slower, pace and with it new opportunities for exploration. With that in mind, we've prepared a resource sheet for students (and parents) who are interested in adopting some mindfulness techniques. You can find that here. There are an abundance of resources you can find online as well as compelling evidence  the benefits of the practice of mindfulness. Two great sites are Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley and Mindful Schools. Have a wonderful summer!

FINALS TIPS

Congratulations!  Summer is just about here. Only 4 days left! Here are some tips for finals that may be helpful for your student:
  • Be strategic in your studying.
    • What grade do you need on the final to keep the grade you have in the class?
    • Over studying does not necessarily bring better results.
  • Studying hard for 30-50 minutes at a time with 10 minutes breaks in between is the most effective way to study.
  • Download the app PhotoMath. It lets you take pictures of math problems and teaches you the correct steps to solve the problem.
  • You're more likely to remember something you wrote in blue ink than in black ink.
  • Peppermint stimulates the brain and helps with concentration.
  • While studying for a certain subject, pretend that you will have to teach the material. It helps you pay more attention.
  • Use wordhippo.com to find words that you can't think of but can describe.
  • Eating chocolate while studying will help the brain retain information easily.
  • Writing something out is equivalent to reading it 7 times.

SENIOR INFORMATION

Google Account Deactivation
When the seniors graduate, their Acalanes Google accounts get shut down (this happens at some point over the summer). Please remind your student of this. Have them move the items they want to save to another account. They may want to access their work next year.
Final Transcripts
All seniors have completed the Senior Exit Survey so their final transcripts have been requested. We know where they are headed and Registrar, Emily Finn will send the transcripts in mid-late June. There is no need to check in - it will get done. Only contact Emily if your child has made a change (there are students still waiting to hear about waitlists).
Happy Summer
It has been an absolute pleasure working with your seniors this year. 17 and 18 year olds hold a special place in my heart. Their futures are bright and their sense of adventure is strong. I wish everyone the best of luck next year!!! We all take a different path and there is not one right path. Trust the journey!

Medical/Medication Forms for Next Year

Getting Things Done FOR TEENS!
I highly recommend this new resource based on the (adult) GTD (Getting Things Done) framework.  Helpful for any of us, this book is geared towards teens but can be utilized by teens AND parents.  These practices will help support both your student's academic success and well-being. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Legislative News
The May revisions to Governor Newsom's proposed state budget for 2019-2020 include additional funding for college scholarships for new teachers, teacher and principal training, reduction of anticipated increases in the districts' pension obligations, and for special education.
The special education funding, however, is being hotly debated.  Newsom hopes to ultimately reduce the number of students in special education by providing support for early intervention programs, but his methods have been sharply criticized, with the Legislative Analyst's Office saying that the proposed funding method unintentionally creates an incentive for schools to keep students in special education so that the schools can receive the unrestricted funding.  Instead, they recommend equalizing per-student special education rates, which vary across the state, or providing specific funding for preschool special education which is already required but not funded.
Another issue with the proposed special education funding is that less than a quarter of the state's districts would receive it, in part because the funding is restricted to districts with high percentages of low income students, foster youth, or English language learners.
For more information on how the proposed budget will affect our district, see this District staff report .
LPIE
Best wishes for a happy, restful and relaxing summer break! LPIE would like to thank all of our donors and volunteer families. It's been a great year, thanks to the support from parents like you, our community and business partners, as well as our amazing Acalanes staff, aides, teachers, administrators and LPIE instructors.
We would especially like to thank Laura-Kate Rurka and Sarah Chang for their hard work this year as liaisons between Acalanes and LPIE. We would also like to thank our fundraising chairs, Paulie Proffet and Beth Soto, as well as our finance chair, Nicole Dunderdale, and Project LPIE chair, Juleen Lapporte. Also, thank you to our Communications Chair, Jenn Keohane, who kept our Acalanes community updated on all things LPIE.
