It seems as though the four day weeks are busier than the full weeks!  Our grade 4 students put on a fantastic choral performance for their grandparents, the Magic Wings Butterfly Museum visited our PreK-3 friends and we're getting ready for our Carnival as this newsletter is sent.

Of particular highlight this week was our 8th grade Mass and Pinning Ceremony. Bishop Mitch celebrated Mass with us and many of our benefactors joined us as well. This is the time of the year that all of the hard work of our dedicated staff, combined with our parent's comittment to Catholic education, shine through our students. They make us very proud.

I'm off to the Carnival!  Hope to see many of you there!

Peace and God's blessing,

Ann E. Dougal

 Special Presentation

President Of The St. Michael's Academy Board
Is Honored

We are including this special message to pay tribute to the Chairperson of the St. Michael's Academy Board of Trustees, Retired Superior Court Judge, The Honorable C. Brian McDonald.

At a special presentation at the Hampden County Hall of Justice in his former courtroom, Judge McDonald was honored by the Massachusetts Bar Association with a "portrait hanging."  This high level of distinction was witnessed by fellow judges, attorneys, family and friends. Those close to him recounted the many years of his dedicated service and spoke of his unwavering character, kindness and fairness that always presided in his courtroom.  Judge McDonald's portrait will now forever hang in this courtroom with the small group of others who have received the same honor.

Judge McDonald invited the Leadership Team and our Honors Choir to perform at the ceremony. The SMA Leadership Team was extremely grateful to witness such an event. Principal Ann Dougal took a moment on the ride back to school to educate the students on what they had witnessed and what an honor it was for them to be included.

St. Michael's Academy is extremely grateful and thankful to have Judge McDonald at the helm of the Board of Trustees.

From The Classroom of Ms. Enderlin - PreK-4

PreK-4 Goes Under The Sea

The students in Prek-4C have been exploring ocean life!  They have learned about different animals that live in the ocean through activities, stories, videos, and puzzles.

The best part was when Mystic Aquarium came to our classroom and taught the students about the different ways that ocean animals move.  The students learned many fun facts, such as how crabs can only move sideways and how sea turtles cannot go into their shells like land turtles can.  The students enjoyed a puppet show and then had the opportunity to observe and touch real ocean animals!  Mystic brought snails, crabs, a sea urchin, and a lobster as well as many nonliving items such as shark teeth and sea shells!

The students all had a great time!

Grade 8 Mass and Pinning Ceremony

 Mass and Pinning Ceremony

Ascension Thursday Mass held a special meaning for our 8th grade students this week.  Bishop Mitchell T. Rosanski joined our 8th grade students along with fellow students, faculty, parents, grandparents and benefactos to celebrate Mass with us. Concelebrating with the Bishop was Fr. David Auferio from Holy Name Parish, Fr. David Darcy from Holy Cross Parish and Msgr. Daniel Liston from St. Patrick's Parish.

Immediately following the Mass, everyone gathered over at the St. Michael's Academy Gymnasium for our annual Pinning Ceremony. Here, donors were given the opportunity to "pin" an 8th grade student with the official SMA pin and to spend some time getting to know them while sharing some light refreshments.

We thank all for attending and helping to make this special occasion even more special!

 Creativity

Gr. 7 Inventors

After learning about the Industrial Revolution  grade seven students set to work to create something  useful for their daily life. We might need to apply for a few patents!

A great way to end the year.

 Grade 4 Chorus

Grade 4 Chorus Wows Grandparents

Under the careful guidance of Miss Vanessa Ford from the Community Music School of Springfield, all the long hours of practice paid off for the 4th grade students as they performed for their grandparents.  Their performance was jammed packed with favorites such as "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," and a beautiful patriotic medley to name just a few.

After the concert, the students were able to enjoy some refreshments with their grandparents.

A special thank you to grandparent, Brenda Delgado, for speaking to the group about the importance of Catholic education
and what it has meant to her family.

 Grade 1 News

Grade 1 Learns About Butterflies

The 1st grade students have been busy studying the life cycle of a butterfly. The students were able to observe the process as their caterpillars turned to chrysalis and eventually blossomed into beautiful butterflies.

And then...the students said goodbye to their friends as they flew off into a new world.

 Magic Wings

PreK-3 Has A Fun Visitor

And speaking of butterflies, the students in Mrs. Brodeur's PreK-3 classroom had a fun visitor this week from the Magic Wings Butterfly Museum in South Deerfield.  Ms. Alicia brought all kinds of interesting things with her - in addition to beautiful butterflies!
