Sesquicentennial Special—Alumni Stories that Shape our History

It's a family thing! In 1984, Brazilian siblings Samir Raffoul (BA in engineering), Samira Raffoul (BA in economics and political science) and Lode Raffoul (BS in agriculture) graduated from The Ohio State University.

Brazil Gateway on Campus

From September 11-20, Jane K. Aparecido, director of the Brazil Gateway, was on campus along with Phoebe You, director of the China Gateway, and Nikhil Tambe, director of the India Gateway. Ohio State Global Gateway directors visit campus twice a year to connect with faculty, staff and students, discuss future plans and strategies with leadership of different colleges and departments and share what the Gateway team has accomplished in their respective regions abroad.

Law Master Class in São Paulo

Micah Berman, JD, associate professor of public health and law at Ohio State, will present at a master class on "Law and Health: The case of tobacco and healthy eating" hosted by the Brazil Gateway, University of São Paulo's (USP) Law School and the Tobacco Control Association. The class be held at the USP Law School auditorium on October 15 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. After the event, Jane K. Aparecido, director of the Brazil Gateway, will be available to talk to prospective students interested in the law program at Ohio State's Moritz College of Law.

Workshop for Partners on the Internationalization Program and Funding System CAPES PrInt

University of São Paulo (USP) and Ohio State have been partners for 55 years. Last year, USP was awarded CAPES PrInt funding to invest in internationalization projects through research and exchanges. Ohio State was listed as a partner institution in the United States. From September 9-11, USP hosted a workshop for its worldwide partners. Garett Heysel, PhD, assistant dean of Arts and Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences, represented Ohio State at the event. Heysel also met with USP college leadership, Ohio State visiting scholars at USP and other university partners in São Paulo.

Global Perspectives: Marília Chiavegato

My name is Marília Chiavegato. I am an agricultural engineer with a PhD in animal science. Last year, I applied to a position of assistant professor in agroecosystem management for food system resilience at The Ohio State University and was offered the position. The appointment is in the Departments of Horticulture and Crop Science (60%) and Animal Sciences (40%).
