From the CEO: Send a Message. Stay Drug Free
Renee Schofield
CEO TSS, Inc.

National Red Ribbon Week 2019, sponsored by National Family Partnership (NFP), is a week devoted to drug prevention advocacy and awareness that happens annually from October 23-31.

For 20 years, TSS has been involved with Red Ribbon Week in multiple communities. Sometimes we work with wellness coalitions, businesses, and media. Often, we run the programs ourselves. I am proud of the TSS teams that spend countless hours gathering materials, getting ribbons ready, making presentations and helping our youth understand the importance of being drug free.

I think Kiki Camarena, the murdered Drug Enforcement Administration agent in whose honor the Red Ribbon campaign was started in 1985, would be impressed with what we are accomplishing in sending a message about TSS's commitment to drug prevention. "Send A Message. Stay Drug Free" happens to be the theme of the 2019 campaign. And that's what it's really about, sending a message for safety, hope and the courage to stay sober.

In this time of changing marijuana laws, many kids are receiving a message that legal is equal to safe. As adults, we understand the perils of inhaling smoke and of ingesting edible products when you don't really know what is in them. We also know the dangers associated with alcohol and other substances that may be legal, but certainly, aren't safe. Kids, on the other hand, don't always read labels, they don't necessarily watch news reports and they are curious, making them an extremely vulnerable population. They tend to think if family members are using it, "It must be ok, right?" Just consider the vaping crisis. It shows us just how susceptible kids can be to slick marketing campaigns and the appearance of something being okay to use.

Red Ribbon Week is our opportunity as a community to encourage kids to remain drug free; to promote safety in a positive way. We don't need scare tactics and we don't need harsh language. We need clear, direct and honest discussion about keeping them safe. And that's where Red Ribbon Week opens the door for communication.

Kiki Camarena was kidnapped, tortured and killed by drug traffickers while he was working undercover to stop the flow of marijuana and cocaine into the US. A friend and fellow agent created the Camarena Clubs to encourage young people to stay away from drug use. Sending positive messages about choosing healthy lifestyles, the clubs soon gained national attention and Red Ribbon Week was born.

Each one of us has the opportunity to make a difference. We can all send a message. Every TSS office will have red ribbons of various types available. We'll be providing resources to school counselors on how they can easily and simply have a Red Ribbon Week campaign. We've ordered ribbons and pencils, posters and pledges. We've sent proclamations to local governments for public reading. Join us! Call your local TSS office today to lend your support with time or money. Or stop by and
pick up a ribbon during Red Ribbon Week. Let's SEND A MESSAGE. STAY DRUG FREE.
Thinking about the Unthinkable

We've all been guilty of not paying attention to our surroundings. But being aware of where you are - whether at work or at home - and what could happen, is the first step to being prepared.

Preparedness can take many forms.  People, as a rule, are more prone to thinking, "It can't happen to me" than "What would I do if?" Most people don't believe they will be in a fire, be stranded when the car breaks down, get lost in the woods, be involved in a violent incident or a natural disaster. But these things happen every day and can quickly become life-threatening if you aren't aware of your options for helping yourself.

The importance of being prepared for what may happen can't be understated. Some things that come to mind right off the bat include:
Pumpkin Carving Safety

There's just about nothing that can get you more into the Halloween spirit than decorating your home with glowing jack-o'-lanterns. For many families, pumpkin carving is a favorite tradition in the weeks leading up to the spooky holiday. But every year, this tradition also brings with it nicks, cuts, piercings and, sometimes, trips to the emergency room.

Pumpkins are tricky, slippery and tough, and our carving tools are usually sharp - a risky combination to say the least, especially when kids are involved.

Here are a few tips to prevent injury and ensure a fun, safe pumpkin carving experience for all:
What did you say?

Just as it's important for employers to minimize the opportunity for injury in the workplace, it's equally important for them to protect their workers' auditory health.

Noise, is one of the most pervasive occupational health problems in the US with life-long impact on workers. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Healthapproximately 22 million U.S. workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels while at work. And hearing loss disability results in an estimated $242 million in workers' compensation payments each year.

With this in mind, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that hearing conservation programs are in place in workplaces where employees are exposed to noise at or above 85 decibels(dB) averaged over eight working hours, or an eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA.)
