Join us for dialogue about caste discrimination and the forms it takes in Canada, with a diverse group of speakers, including activist and community leader Jai Birdi of the Chetna Association of Canada, an anti-caste discrimination activist group; Sasha Sabherwal, Ph.D. candidate at Yale University whose work centres on caste and gender dynamics in the greater Vancouver South Asian community; Satwinder Bains, director of the South Asian Studies Institute at the University of the Fraser Vallery; Anita Lal, Community Relations Specialist at Windmill Microlending and widely involved in community development and advocacy; and Inderdeep Dhaliwal, recent UBC graduate in International Relations; moderated by Anne Murphy, Co-Director, Centre for India and South Asia Research.

The Rohingya Refugees in Limbo: Repatriation and Resettlement 

This roundtable will discuss the complexity of the Rohingya refugee issue from historical, cultural, and social and human rights issues in order to understand and find solutions essential to help build refugees' confidence to contemplate their voluntary return.

Organized by: Institute of Asian Art (Vancouver Art Gallery), Capture Photography Festival, Indian Summer Festival, and the Asia Art Archive
 
Presented in dialogue with Moving Still: Performative Photography from India, this programming series further investigates key themes in the exhibition, including the history of photography in producing an image or representation of material such as gender, religion and sexual identity.

In addition to the programs listed, there will be an ongoing series of in-gallery activations and pop-up conversations taking place in the 3rd Floor Rotunda's interpretive space throughout the months of June and July. Led by community organizations, these programs will allow visitors to explore, gather and discuss the themes in the exhibition Moving Still: Performative Photography from India.

Dr. Rajneesh Choubisa, Assistant Professor (Psychology) from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, will be a visiting faculty member in the Department of Educational & Counselling Psychology and Special Education from 25 May 2019 to 14 July 2019. Dr. Choubisa areas of interest include industrial/organizational psychology, positive psychology, and career guidance psychology.
