Should Not be a Luxury.

Affordable and adequate housing is a crucial component of disability rights, but is still seriously lacking in the United States. The Department of Housing & Urban Development's recent shift of emphasis on self-sufficiency ignores the reality that many people with disabilities cannot work full time or at all due to the nature of their disabilities.  In this article, the author said that until housing is treated as a human right rather than a privilege people with disabilities should be grateful for, the result will be our continued commodification and exploitation. Loopholes in Labor Laws Allow Wage Abuses for
People with Disabilities.

Recently the Department of Labor (DOL) took action against a company after finding nearly 250 workers with disabilities were being exploited . The organization promoted itself as a non-profit vocational training program for people with disabilities, but in reality operated as a subcontractor for local factories, providing menial tasks to workers with developmental disabilities. The workers were paid sub-minimum wage and often in the form of gift cards. Follow this link to read more about the loopholes that allow sub minimal wage practices
