Dear Neighbors,
If you've attended Lincoln Central's events in recent years, you already know that magicians play a prominent role. Their amazing illusions delight and mystify us time and again. Join us at Spring Zing tomorrow and you'll see it first hand.
Yet the real "magic" of our neighborhood lies elsewhere. Magic can be found smiles and laughter of parents and children alike at LCA's family friendly festivals. There is magic in the beauty of our parks and in the hearts of the volunteers who tend to them. Our reception-style gatherings in Fire Station Park & Gardens are filled with the magical interaction of neighbors coming together to enjoy community, conversation and the flavors of our neighborhood. The magic in Lincoln Central is undeniable.
There are those, however, who practice a different type of illusion. They appear, seemingly out of thin air, with an urgent need requiring immediate assistance. When the issues are resolved to the best of LCA's ability, they vanish as suddenly as they arrived. It's not a particularly original trick, but always mystifying.
We also frequently hear from folks in the neighborhood who've never joined our organization (or who've failed to renew their membership) to either express the view that LCA isn't doing something they believe we should be doing or to suggest that one or more of our initiatives isn't being handled to their satisfaction. Rarely, of course, are such viewpoints accompanied by offers of assistance., usually only by a lack of curiosity about how things get done in an all-volunteer organization. Amazing? No, not really; it comes with the territory.
What's actually amazing is the many of you who work together as volunteers to enhance our neighborhood for this and future generations as well as those of you who support the organization in other ways. What you help create is magic indeed, not merely an illusion. Some don't get it; some never will. That doesn't matter, though, because enough of you do.
If you've never joined Lincoln Central or haven't renewed, what are you waiting for? There's never been a better time than now to let the genie out of the bottle and share your magic with the neighborhood.

A HEART FOR SENIORS
Community and Our Older Neighbors

My wife Ausra and I (pictured here) love telling folks about LCA and our activities that draw so many residents out of their homes and careers and into an increased focus on friendships, community, and neighborhood involvement.
That's actually what drew us to LCA. You see, like so many other LCA members, Ausra and I don't live within the organization's geographic boundaries. Yet, we became enchanted by the way LCA seems to so personally connect to people, to projects and to community.
LCA's events aren't about drinking beer along a booth-lined street fair with strangers—not that there's anything wrong with that. They're more about getting to know people from our streets and neighborhoods, yearning to know each other better, and sharing interest in one another's welfare.

My involvement in LCA feeds my need to connect with our local community. It also aligns with my professional calling. Together with Ausra, I own
Lincoln Park Family Care
which provides assistance to our older adults in need. (Jeff pictured at LCA's 2019 Annual Meeting.)
One such alignment involves LCA's upcoming promotion in connection with Belmont Village and Victory Gardens Theatre event to experience
If I Forget.
As Kathy Jordan's excellent overview of the play points out (see adjacent article), the story explores, among other things, the challenges of family dynamics and the difficulty of reaching consensus for the care of an aging parent.

The Heart of a Family

Even the most loving families can find themselves disagreeing about issues, especially as they grow older and see each other less often.
|
Gathered for their father’s 75th birthday are a brother and two sisters, plus other family members. They find themselves disagreeing on a variety of subjects—the mental health of a daughter, the behavior of a son, the views on Judaism of the brother (the family is Jewish), the father’s store. A second get-together produces another issue—how to provide adequate care for their aging father.
Called “passionate and provoking” by The New York Times, the story is told with dry wit as the family discovers new things about each other and works to solve their differences in ways that will satisfy all of them. The play is scheduled to run through July 7.

FROM SPOILS TO SOIL AS FIRE STATION PARK BLOOMS
We Are Now Composting at Fire Station Park!

We are excited to announce that LCA is now composting at Fire Station Park (1944 N. Larrabee Street) and anyone can contribute to the bin by following the composting rules posted above the bin.
And, did you know that a lot of waste at home can be composted to create nutrient rich, organic fertilizer for potted plants and gardens? Compost your food scraps in our designated compost pallet and help us create rich, organic soil for our lovely garden. Gardeners call compost black gold with good reason!
5 REASONS TO COMPOST
- Many of the micro-nutrients in compost have a pesticide-like effect on garden pests.
- Composting reduces and even eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers.
- Adding compost to gardening soil can boost the production of both edible and ornamental plants.
- Adding compost to soil prevents it from becoming too acidic, or too alkaline.
- If not composted, food scraps and yard /garden waste end up in landfills where they do not decompose. Instead, they release harmful methane – a green house gas that is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

SO HOW CAN YOU COMPOST?
Organic matter which is good for making compost is classified as Brown or Green.
GREEN (Source of Nitrogen):
Coarsely chopped fruit and vegetable scraps, plant trimmings, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, grass clippings.
You can collect your food scraps at home in a freezer and put it in our bin at your convenience. Just spread it out and layer it with double the brown material.
BROWN (Source of Carbon):
Always add a generous layer of BROWN materials on top of your green layer. These include leaves, leaf mulch, twigs, straw or hay, cotton fabric, paper (newspaper, paper plates, coffee filters, napkins, writing paper), cardboard (without any waxy coating)
We have collected leaves in bins for you to use.

NEVER PUT THESE
Please do not put animal waste, weeds, black walnut shells, chemically treated wood, plastic bags, meat, fish, fats, bones and dairy. Doing so will attract rodents and other unwanted pests. Please do not put ANY plastics - even ‘biodegradable’ plastics. Such plastics are only compostable in industrial composting facilities.

Park Improvements and Volunteering

With this funding, LCA volunteers are installing a rain barrel and obtaining native perennials to fill in the gaps. The fencing around the vegetable beds has been removed and the soil enhanced with 12” of high grade garden soil for improved growth of our vegetables! LCA is pursuing a new design and funding for the fencing.

LCA is collaborating with
Abraham Lincoln Elementary School
students who are growing vegetable seedlings in their greenhouse, to be planted by them at the Park later in the season.

Girl Scout Troop 20429 from
Immaculate Conception St. Joseph School
(pictured here with LCA volunteers Sally Drucker, Nancy Morris and Laura Meyers) is earning merit badges by volunteering for several hours at the garden this season.

BEN HOSEK
Serving With Heart
|
Ben Hosek, formerly Engineer at Fire Station 22 at Armitage & Larrabee, was recently promoted to Relief Lieutenant in the 1st District which covers downtown, Lincoln Park and the lakefront area. Congratulations, Ben!
Ben is a valued member and friend of LCA. He has been LCA's liaison at the firehouse for our work at Fire Station Park and has provided much assistance for us. Ben has also been responsible for arranging Engine 22's visits to LCA events for the last several years.
|
Despite the promotion and transfer, we'll still see Ben at Engine 22 on occasion. Relief Lieutenants are not assigned to one specific firehouse. Instead, they fill in when assigned officers are on vacation, injured or sick. According to Ben, "I'll work E 22 when the Captain is off. My heart is still in Lincoln Park."

An Artist With Heart

Congratulations to LCA member and friend, Josh Moulton as he celebrates the 8th anniversary of

MARK BUCIAK
Running With Heart (and a Repaired One)
|
|
Congratulations to LCA member Mark Buciak for completing his 40th consecutive Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15th, 2019. Buciak, 58, is the runner from Illinois to have ever achieved that milestone.
More remarkable is that for the last 13 years Mark has been running with a heart surgically repaired using a cow valve. On April 16, 2006, he completed his 27th consecutive Boston Marathon only 11 weeks after his aortic valve was replaced by one from a cow.
Mark and his wife Barrie Brejcha have been LCA members for several years. They live on Howe Street with their daughters.

I am quite familiar with those dynamics through my profession, so LCA asked me to share my experiences to help frame some of the issues confronted by the play.
In many cultures around the world, older adults are revered as featured guests of community gatherings and events. In the U.S., many older adults are alone with no nearby families, and they often find themselves isolated from our frenetically-paced world of careers, kids, and personal interests. It leaves many with only a few holidays each year that allow them to connect with their neighbors, their friends, and even their families.

But times of need are rarely predictable, convenient, or easily identified.
It requires our attention.
It leaves many with only a few holidays each year that allow them to connect with their neighbors, their friends, and even their families.
We shouldn't wait for the holidays to pay attention to changing situations. A simple checklist can help us become more effective guardians for the older adults in our neighborhoods, families, or friend circles.
- Has their demeanor, personality, or mental acuity changed?
- Are they less social, harder to reach, or withdrawing from contact?
- Do they have new and noticeable physical ailments or limitations?
- Has their physical appearance or attention to grooming changed?
- When you are invited into their home, is it in the condition you are used to seeing it?
- Is their home's exterior showing signs of neglect or disrepair?
So often we are told to respect others' privacy and to s
tay out
of their business. But prompt timing is crucial in many situations. Tactful observations and questions, and a respectful, caring approach to share your concern directly with a loved-one, friend, or neighbor can be important in unwrapping an individual's acute needs
before these needs require emergency response.
Susan McDaniels, a Chicago north-side licensed clinical social worker who works primarily with seniors and their family members, told me that intervening before there is a crisis, "gives individuals, family members and their loved ones more options and control over life-changing situations and greater options for long term planning. And it alleviates worry and reduces anxiety for everyone involved."
If you don't feel you have a strong enough relationship to approach someone directly, consider reaching out to your local Department on Aging. A local social worker, psychologist, or field of aging professional like me can also provide a second opinion or support. You might look to recruit one of these resources as a partner in offering your concerns. Doing so could lessen the chance of your neighbor, friend, or loved one feeling embarrassment or defensiveness as you look to help them address a previously unseen, unknown, or neglected challenge.
One thing is true for most of us: Change is easier to manage when it isn't an emergency. When we feel informed with time to react, we can more easily manage any situation.

The acoustic band plays the hot gypsy jazz music of Django Reinhardt of Paris from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, including vocals, clarinet, violin, accordion, bass and guitars. SHEFFIELD NATIONAL HISTORIC DISTRICT LISTED AS ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACE
The Sheffield National Historic District has made the top of the list of endangered places on the 2019 Landmarks Illinois list. This Historic District is significant because it is one of the best examples of a late 19th century neighborhood in Chicago. However, for over 25 years, historic buildings have been torn down at an alarming rate to make space for new construction.
