LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Payton parents,

This is a unique time of year in the annual life of a high school.  The school is filled with juxtaposed feelings of excitement for the conclusion of a fine year of academic growth and for all of our students to move forward to their next level of education.  And there is notable melancholy in that, in a few short days, we will hold commencement exercises for our seniors...a collection of fine individuals who are decidedly well-prepared to confidently move onward to put their fingerprints on new endeavors...and thus, their kind and enlivened spirits will not be with us on a daily basis for advisory, academic classes, enrichments, seminars, and in our extracurricular activities.  We-the Payton faculty-have come to know and deeply care for each of them.  To be sure, we will miss our daily doses of them and we are eminently thankful to all of our students, and a particular tip of the cap to our seniors and their parents, for making our lives more joyful and for making Payton such a remarkable community.

And, as the academic year draws to a close, a wholehearted note of appreciation to all of you, for supporting our students-often times not just your own child, but opening your heart, home, wallet, refrigerator, etc. to many other Payton students, and offering them cheers, counsel, a ride home, a high five, encouragement, and sometimes a shoulder or an ear-all towards the selfless end of making Payton a more vibrant family.

Thank you!

Tim

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

SUMMER IS NEAR

Summer is around the corner. Please be sure your students take a break. Grizzlies work hard. They work hard academically, emotionally, and physically to meet the range of demands that sometimes seem to pull them in different directions. They work hard to meet our standards, your standards, and their community's standards. Most of all, they work hard on themselves - sometimes, too hard. Let summer be a break, a respite, a time for renewal. Let summer be a time for our kids to be kids and to just be. I never could have imagined what adulting would feel like; there is no break from adulting. Knowing this, encourage your student(s) to relax, to have fun, to do enjoy this stage of life while they still can.

From the Band Room
The Spring Concert for the Jazz, Ensemble and Concert Band was wonderful!  The performances included familiar pieces from Star Wars as well as an interesting assortment chosen for their historical and musical significance.  Photos are of Payton Seniors with Mr. Rode and the concert.

From the Choir Room
This years Spring concerts both beginner and advanced were outstanding!  Thank you to all the graduating seniors for your voices.

From the Dance Studio
The Dance I & II students took a guided tour of the new exhibition, The
Legacy of Chicago Dance, at the Newberry Library.  If you would also like to see it, the exhibition is free and open to the public through July 6th.

At the end of May, 25 students attended the 1st CPS High School Dance Day at Columbia College.  Students took Modern, West African, and Hip-hop master classes with Columbia College dance professors, attended a panel discussion about dance as a career, and watched a performance in which Payton Dance Company performed.

We've had a WONDERFUL year in the dance department and will miss our seniors next year!

The 4th annual Spring Dance Concert, Student Steps, was a great success!!  The pieces in this show were completely choreographed by students from the Dance I & II classes, student-led dance groups, and seminars.  Thank you to all of those who came to the performance!

Payton Students Win Top Two Prizes in the Newhouse Architecture Competition

Sophomores Fionn Hui and Linnea Jones won the Overall Grand and First Grand prizes respectively in the Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition in the Advanced Architecture division. Both students have participated in the Chicago Architecture Center's Teen Fellows program. During the last several months of the Fellows program, they developed the physical and digital designs submitted to the competition. Lynn Osmond, President and CEO of the Chicago Architecture Center presented the awards May 18th during the competition's showcase.

The challenge for the Advanced Architecture division was to design a Dragon Boat Racing Facility at Ping Tom Park. The park is in the midst of Chinatown in Chicago's south side, situated by the river and near an existing field house. The Ping Tom Park Advisory Council and the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) are working to improve the park through public art and events such as dragon boat racing. The Dragon Boat Facility is intended to house the boats, activate public engagement, and integrate with the existing field house.
