Note from our Executive Director

So, we have made another trip around the sun that is the school year. I have the privilege of starting my 4th year of serving as Executive Director of this incredible organization - San Antonio Youth Literacy. I can't possibly express the joy and fulfillment I experience every day knowing that when I pass to whatever lies beyond this reality, I will hopefully have contributed in some small way to the lives of children and their futures.  Read more >>>

Save the date for "A Conversation with Naomi Shihab Nye," moderated by Robert Rivard on Thursday, September 5. Local author Naomi Shihab Nye began her writing career at the age of 7. She is the author or editor of over 30 books including poetry collections, short stories, novels, children's and young-adult literature, and essays. She is currently on the faculty at Texas State University. Robert Rivard is the founder, editor, and publisher of the Rivard Report, a nonprofit, nonpartisan digital news organization with a focus on San Antonio and Bexar County. Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Camp Read Aloud

Looking for something to do over the summer? Come volunteer with SAYL! We are looking for volunteers to help with our Camp Read Aloud program at our summer program sites. Volunteers must be 15 years of age and can sign up for one shift or multiple shifts.

Book Buddies News 

BOOK CELEBRATIONS: All the hard work that Book Buddies volunteers put in this year came to fruition the last week of May at our end-of-year Book Celebrations. This year we were able to provide 60,000 books to 10,000 children in 20 Title I schools in the San Antonio Independent School District. Each child got to choose six books to take home to start a home library.  Read more >>>

Donor Spotlight

A special thank you to the following foundations for their continued assistance -  $350 from The Frankie Casseb Youth Literacy Club for its quarterly donation, $2,500 from the Education Forum, and  $5,000 from the Mays Family Foundation. These organizations continue to support SAYL's efforts to address the literacy needs of San Antonio's youth through their financial support and for that we say THANK YOU!!
