Dear Climate Friend,
2019 is flying by and the year is almost half over.
Elders Climate Action
members have been active across the country. Whether it is letter writing, texting to get out the vote, learning new skills to take action, engaging with and supporting the youth movement or starting new chapters, it has been a busy year so far.
This year new chapters are blossoming in various parts of the country, some as state chapters and others as teams taking on local projects
and we're enhancing our collaborative partnerships. Momentum in climate action is building, a
s the youth worldwide are standing up and taking action, we as elders must stand with this future generation that will be inheriting this planet. Elders, talk to your children and grandchildren, let them know how important what they are doing is and that you will work hard to help them make this planet a beautiful place to live.
Thank you for all you do for the grandchildren, future generations and all life,

Elders in Action: The food waste composting project of the Ann Arbor Area ECA Chapter
One of the first efforts of the Chapter was to collaborate with a local partner, the Climate Change and Earth Care Task Force, to apply for a small grant from Ann Arbor to expand food waste composting efforts. The program was designed to increase food waste composting in a target city neighborhood by making compost carts available at reduced cost, and through a careful and redundant educational campaign over several months.
Through the grant we made 30 additional compost carts available to residents in the pilot neighborhood who did not have compost carts. Trash data for September, October and November in our pilot route demonstrated that trash weight declined from 2017 to 2018—an average decline of 10.7% per month.
We enlisted the help of over 30 volunteers, committing almost 900 hours, an estimated $20,000 of volunteer time to match the less than $4,500 we spent in direct and indirect costs.

NorCal Chapter's Intergenerational Meeting with Presidio Graduate School Students
On April 5, 2019, Northern California Chapter ECA members participated with Presidio Graduate School students in an intergenerational meeting organized by Wilford H. Welch, former professor of international business management and author
of In Our Hands: A Handbook for Intergenerational Actions to Solve the Climate Crisis
.
Some specific suggestions were:
- Have Civic Dinners https://www.civicdinners.com/ and identify other such civic organizations
- Expand, promote and market workshops. Develop and provide materials from which to choose depending on the age of the group.
- Break things down to viable, measurable actions such as is done with Resilient Neighborhoods https://www.resilientneighborhoods.org/
- Utilize College Alumni organizations connecting elders and students during reunion weekends as well as online through alumni networks
- Mobilize high school and elementary school PTAs to facilitate workshops between parents and students
- Organize intergenerational hikes in nature
- Create online group which could list and connect people from ECA, Presidio or other interested organizations
- Get corporations who now have “corporate sustainability programs” to initiate “corporate climate programs” that are intergenerational.

Class of 0000 - The Voice of the Youth is Coming Out Strong on Climate Action
|
|
|
Class of 0000 is a student-led campaign to take over graduation for climate action. Together, valedictorians and salutatorians across the country will deliver the same message to our leaders in their commencement speeches: Deliver a plan for ZERO emissions—or get ZERO of our votes. "We demand zero net emissions and will accept zero excuses from our elected leaders, because we have zero time left. So this year, we're not the Class of 2019, we're the Class of 0000." We elders are supporting their action, learn more:

#AllEyesOnJuliana👀
The constitutional youth climate lawsuit, Juliana v. United States, will be heard before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Portland, Oregon.
Let’s make history and have this be the most watched Ninth Circuit oral argument ever.
- We need to protect the constitutional rights of young people.
- We need the U.S. government to know that we are watching as it tries to deny the rights of young people in court.
- We need #AllEyesOnJuliana 👀

THIS IS ZERO HOUR
Youth Climate Summit
Miami, FL. July 12-14
Have you heard
, Our partner, Zero Hour is hosting a Youth Climate Summit. Elders Climate Action is proud to support their efforts (and even join the summit).
A year after the historic youth climate march, the youth strike again!
Join Zero Hour in
This Is Zero Hour: The Youth Climate Summit
in Miami, a frontline community. The Summit will be held from July 12 – 14 at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center, 711 NW 72nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33126.
The Zero Hour Team chose to host the summit in Miami because of the huge disasters Miami is already facing and will continue to face with worsening climate change. With two degrees Celsius of warming, the entire city will be underwater. Also, as the ocean gets warmer, it is causing toxic “red tide” algae blooms, which can irritate respiratory illnesses and cause other negative health effects in humans.
With the summit, Zero Hour hopes to uplift the citizens of Miami, and train more young people to be effective climate justice advocates.
Registration will be open soon!
