Governor and Lt. Governor at Conference

Governor Gregg will speak to attendees about the condition of the state and the 2019 legislative session. Gov. Reynolds and Lt. Gov Gregg are key advocates for workforce and rural Iowa and we are excited to have them join us at the ABI conference in Ames.

Governor Reynolds concludes 2019 legislative action
Governor Reynolds on Friday took action on the two remaining bills the Legislature sent her during the 2019 legislative session. The first bill,
HF 546
, extends the statewide penny for school infrastructure and was signed in Sioux City. The legislation increases the number of dollars that will go to the Property Tax Equity Relief (PTER) fund and expands what the penny can be used for such as career academies, while also requiring additional requirements before the dollars can be used for athletic facilities.

The Governor
vetoed
the final bill of the session, which would have replaced the 3% THC cap with a 25 grams of THC limit.
HF 732
expanded the definition of health care practitioner to physician assistants and nurse practitioners allowing them to certify patients for a medical cannabidiol card. The legislation passed by a wide bipartisan margin in both the House and Senate. However, after the bill passed the House there were legislators who expressed concern after additional information was brought forward. ABI has been involved in discussions surrounding medical cannabis since the first legislation passed to ensure there are adequate employer protections to keep workplaces safe. ABI will continue to work with legislators on this policy and also on employment-related issues in this bill.
ABI Wraps Up Regional Meetings

The ABI public policy team concluded the regional meeting road trip on Wednesday, May 29 in Pella. Thank you to all the ABI members who attended the legislative meetings around the state and provided feedback about key issues that make a difference to your business and the individuals you employ. The turnout and discussion were excellent and we look forward to hearing from members throughout the summer on issues as they arise. IIPAC More than Halfway to 2019 Goal
Thank you to the 83 donors who have invested more than $42,000 in IIPAC this year. ABI’s PAC invests directly in candidates who support pro-jobs policies that result in business certainty and maintaining Iowa’s competitiveness. IIPAC’s goal for the last several years has been to raise $75,000. We have not yet met that goal and we hope that 2019 will be the year it happens. We are over halfway to the goal! If you have not yet given to IIPAC or shared IIPAC’s success with other ABI members and Iowa business leaders,

Statewide elections continue to be more costly, but not nearly as costly as the result to business if legislators are elected who do not understand the importance of key business issues. ABI leaders and staff see IIPAC as an investment to Iowa’s business climate and we hope you do too.
Federal Spotlight: Congressional Recess means town hall meetings
The Memorial Day holiday meant Congressional recess for members of Iowa’s Congressional delegation. During the recess, Iowa’s delegation typically hosts town hall meetings or other constituent events around the state. Senator Grassley held a meeting in Ottumwa this morning and will appear tomorrow, May 31 at the Appanoose County Courthouse in Centerville from 8:00-9:00 am.
