Pediatrician Credits FAR for Improving Her Medical Skills and Practice
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Sona Antonyan, 43, returned to her home province of Syunik to work at Goris Medical Center. She is now head of its Pediatric Unit. Her relationship with FAR started in 2007, when she was first selected to participate in FAR's Continuing Medical Education Program (CME). Since also did the program in 2009, 2012 and 2015, each time focusing on pediatrics. "The courses were very effective; the theory and practice of the curriculum was very comprehensive. We discussed our doubts with our supervisors on the spot. The latest medical literature was also available to us," said Dr. Antonyan, who also compared the CME training with her days in medical school. "Now, it's different. We need do more research, stay current and up to date with the latest information and skills, and move ahead. This is what matters for any doctor."

Cutting Hair is a Growing Business in Rural Armenia
When Tatevik Gevorgyan first learned about a "Start Your Own Business" project sponsored by the Fund for Armenian Relief, she talked to her family about opening a hair salon.
And open one she did. Avrora
, the first hair salon in Artsvaberd (a village in Armenia's Berd region) opened with help from FAR's Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Program. FAR's support enabled Tatevik to outfit her salon with furniture, styling instruments, and other tools of the hairdressing trade.
"There was no hair salon in our village," she recalled. "People used to travel to Berd City, about a 40-minute drive, to do their hair. So we thought, 'This could work.' And it did!" Tatevik opened her salon in April, kicking off the opening with two days of free services to entice new customers. "We now serve about five clients a day. But I'm certain we'll have more with time."
In the year since FAR launched the Start Your Own Business project, 38 up-and-coming businesses and business ideas have cropped up in this impoverished rural district of Armenia. Qualifying businesses receive grants to help finance the materials and resources most needed by entrepreneurs. FAR staffers monitor each grant recipient after implementation.

Second Palm Sunday
On the Sunday following the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, the Armenian Church celebrates "Second" Palm Sunday. The name of the feast has been derived from Palm Sunday, which precedes Easter. In the week leading up to His betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection, the "first" Palm Sunday symbolized the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem where people met Him with great joy and glorified His Holy Name. The Second Palm Sunday is the commemoration of the triumphant entry of the Ascended Christ into the Heavenly Jerusalem, where the angels meet him with great happiness and delight.
According to tradition, during St. Gregory the Illuminator's imprisonment in the pit, he was visited every day by the same angel. However one day, the angel did not come. The following morning, St. Gregory inquires to the reason for his absence, to which the angel responds that during the Ascension, Christ had passed through the ranks of the Angels, and they celebrate that feast each year. The angel visiting St. Gregory was from the fourth class of angelic hosts, and thus, on the fourth day following the Ascension, his rank of angels commemorates and celebrates Christ's Ascension to heaven every year.
Second Palm Sunday once more reminds us of the Ascension of Christ and grants us the hope for ascending to heaven after our deaths, and being in the bliss of God's presence.

Հինանց շրջանի յոթերորդ կիրակին կոչվում է Երկրորդ Ծաղկազարդ: Ինչպես առաջին Ծաղկազարդը Մեծ պահքի յոթերորդ կիրակի օրն է, այնպես էլ երկրորդը`«Հինանց» յոթերորդ կիրակի օրը: Գրիգոր Բ Վկայասեր կաթողիկոսի սահմանած այս տոնը կապված է զուտ ազգային ավանդության հետ, համաձայն որի, երբ Սուրբ Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչը գտնվել է Խոր վիրապում, մի հրեշտակ ամեն օր այցելել է նրան: Համբարձման չորրորդ օրը հրեշտակը չի այցելել: Հաջորդ օրը Սուրբ Գրիգորի այն հարցին, թե ինչու նախորդ օրն իրեն չի այցելել, հրեշտակը պատասխանել է, որ Քրիստոսի Համբարձումը տոնելու համար հրեշտակների ինը դասերը հաջորդաբար տոնախմբություն են կատարում, և ինքը, չորրորդ դասից լինելով, չորրորդ օրը չի ցանկացել իր դասի ուրախություններից բացակայել: Երկրորդ Ծաղկազարդին նույնությամբ կրկնվում են Ծաղկազարդի տոնի ընթերցվածներն ու շարականները (Արտակ արք. Մանուկեան, «Հայ եկեղեցու տոները»):
Եկեղեցու հայրերը նշում են, որ եթե առաջին Ծաղկազարդի ժամանակ հիշատակվում է Տիրոջ գալուստը դեպի մեզ`երկրային Երուսաղեմ, ապա Երկրորդ Ծաղկազարդին`Նրա գնալը դեպի հրեշտակները`Վերին Երուսաղեմ: Առաջինին փառաբանվում է որպես Դավթի Որդի, իսկ երկրորդին`որպես Աստծո Որդի:
Այս օրը յուրաքանչյուրը մասնակից է լինում հրեշտակների տոնին և նրանց ուրախությանը, ովքեր մխիթարեցին և պահպանեցին մեր ազգի Լուսավորչին:

Don't Miss this Sunday's Shnorhali School End of The Year Hantess, Graduation and Beautiful Play!
We are excited and thrilled to bring to our congregation on Sunday, June 2 a pleasant afternoon presenting our Shnorhali Students. Following Badarak, they will perform during a memorable hantess several songs, recite poems and our church will acknowledge our graduates. Additionally, the Shnorhali graduating class and students of the 5th and 4th classes will present a heartfelt short play devoted to the Armenian Language.
The play includes wonderful music by Komitas as we celebrate our composer's 150th birthday this year. We express our appreciation to all those who contributed their time and expertise to make this effort a reality - Directed by Edita Kalayjian, Graduating Class teacher Ms. Martha, 5th Grade Class Ms. Anushik, and 4th Grade Class Ms. Maro.

Ararat Avak Society Luncheon
The Avak Society hosted a Spring Brunch on Saturday, May 25. Community got together for a fellowship and enjoyed fabulus homemade Armenian brunch. The guest presenter of the day was Mrs. Karine Sahagian who made a special illustrated presentation about the forgotten Armenian churches and Communities of Singapore and India. Our appreciation goes to the Avak Society coordinating committee members and volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

ACYOA Juniors Participate in Hye M'rtsoom 2019
This Memorial Day weekend, 12 youths traveled to Watertown, MA to take part in the 44th annual Hye M'rtsoom. There were participants from 17 parishes across the Eastern Diocese who met for a weekend of worship, sports, and fellowship. Diocesan Vicar the Very Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian spent time among the teens gathered in Watertown and brought greetings from the Primate, Bishop Daniel.
The youth of our parish participated in 2 sports competitions. We are very proud of our ACYOA Juniors. They encouraged and cheered each other on even when they lost. They looked out for each other during all of the events. They played, they danced, they laughed and had a great time. Thank you St. James Parish for hosting such an amazing event for all of our children. Our gratitude goes to all the parents who volunteered to travel to Watertown to help and chaperon our youth.

For 101 Years, a Lesson in Heroism
Each year on May 28, Armenians around the world honor the anniversary of the Battle of Sardarabad and the establishment of the First Armenian Republic (1918-1920). This week marked 101 years since those fateful events.
In the depths of the Armenian Genocide, Ottoman forces advanced on Eastern Armenia-coming within striking distance of the capital city Yerevan and Holy Etchmiadzin. But they were repelled by the native Armenians in a series of battles at Sardarabad, Abaran, and Karakilisa-which have come to be known as the "Heroic Battles of May."
In an encyclical honoring this week's anniversary, His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of All Armenians, paid tribute to the divine spirit of unity animating the Armenian people in their life-or-death struggle to defend the remnant of their ancient homeland.
"The heroic deeds of Armenians who struggled for our homeland, for our identity and statehood, stands as a testimony to their love and fidelity to the nation and its holy sanctuaries. It exhorts all of us to be worthy and devoted children of our homeland."

St. Nersess Seminary Expresses Hope and Gratitude
On May 18, a capacity crowd filled the ballroom of Old Tappan Manor in New Jersey to support St. Nersess Armenian Seminary-and to honor two figures instrumental to its modern development.
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian and Bishop Daniel Findikyan were the guests of honor at the celebration of the seminary's distinguished history and bright future, in an evening titled "Hope and Gratitude."
In welcoming remarks, seminary dean Fr. Mardiros Chevian explained the evening's theme. "Tonight we offer Hope for the future, as we begin a new chapter with Bishop Daniel as our Primate and president of the St. Nersess board of directors. And we express Gratitude for past accomplishments: in particular, our debt of gratitude goes to Archbishop Khajag, our former Primate and board president, who had the confidence and foresight to save our institution from possible closure," Fr. Chevian said.

The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Ho-sanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" and Je-sus found a young ass and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; be-hold, your king is coming, sitting on an ass's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. The Pharisees then said to one another, "You see that you can do nothing; look, the world has gone after him." Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew went with Philip and they told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."
