LGBTQ community gets spiritual support
in new art by Janet McKenzie
New spiritual affirmation for the LGBTQ community comes in a breakthrough work by a major painter of inclusive sacred art. “A Brave and Quiet Heart” by Janet McKenzie honors lives lost at the Pulse Orlando gay nightclub shooting. “This is the first time I have directly made the subject of a painting undeniably the LGBTQ community,” McKenzie said. Saints Boris and George: United in love
St Boris is one of the most popular Russian saints, but his same-sex love story has been buried. Boris confided in George the Hungarian, prayed with him and when assassins attacked, George laid down his life and they died together. They appear in a 14th-century icon. More info
Mary and Martha: Sisters or lesbians?
Mary and Martha of Bethany were two of Jesus' closest friends. The Bible calls them "sisters" who lived together, but reading the Bible with queer eyes raises another possibility. Maybe Mary and Martha were a lesbian couple.  More info
Three new LGBTQ Christian books in August
Three new titles are added this month to Q Spirit's roundup of LGBTQ Christian books published in 2018. They are “ Transfigured” by Suzanne DeWitt Hall, “ Together at the Table” by Karen Oliveto and “ Queer Theology” by Linn Marie Tonstad. More info
Symeon and John:
Holy fool and hermit loved each other
Sixth-century Syrian monks Symeon and John were joined in a same-sex union and lived together as desert-dwelling hermits for 29 years. After a tearful split-up, Symeon went on to become known as the Holy Fool of Emesa. More info
Wilgefortis: Bearded woman saint
St. Wilgefortis prayed to avoid marriage to a pagan king -- and her prayers were answered when she grew a beard!  This "virgin martyr" has natural appeal for LGBTQ people.   Her popularity has continued since the Middle Ages despite opposition from church officials.   More info
Gentileschi shows strong Biblical women
Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi inspires people with her paintings of strong Biblical women -- created despite the obstacles that she faced as a woman in 17th-century Italy. Many LGBTQ people and allies can relate to her battles against discrimination and sexual violence.  More info
Kuan Yin: Queer Buddhist Christ figure
Kuan Yin, the genderfluid spirit of compassion in Buddhism, is sometimes thought of as a queer Christ figure or LGBTQ role model. Buddhists celebrate the enlightenment of Kuan Yin in August this year. Transcending gender identity, Kuan Yin appears in whatever form is necessary to help people in need: sometimes female, sometimes male, sometimes androgynous.  More info

Thanks for helping Kittredge Cherry share LGBTQ spirituality!
Dear Friend

Consider the words of Janet McKenzie, whose art is highlighted here at Q Spirit this month: “As an artist I have a responsibility to be a voice for change, even hope.”

As people of faith, we can share this responsibility with joy. Be a voice of hope.

Blessings,
