First Surgery Residency Program Graduate s

The Department of Surgery and FAU Residency Program in General Surgery are proud to announce the graduation of the first class of chief residents. On June 30, Drs. Junyan GuBoris HristovIbrahim Jabbour, and Noe Rodriguez will have fulfilled the training requirements outlined by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and be eligible to take the ABS qualifying examination. All chiefs will pursue further specialty training and each matched into a highly competitive fellowship program: Dr. Gu will train in Vascular Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center; Drs. Hristov and Jabbour both will pursue careers in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and matched at the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Florida, Jacksonville, respectively; Dr. Rodriguez is continuing his specialty training in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Advanced Endoscopy at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio.

Two surgery residents are returning from successful research years in cardiac surgery at UCLA and Cedars Sinai (Halah Abdulameer) and the Texas Heart Center/Baylor College of Medicine (Ayman Almousa); a third is returning from research in Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Florida (Sana Qureshi)Dr. Jaymie Henry is extending her research period for a second year, collaborating with the African College of Surgeons and Kenyan Ministry of Health on the readiness assessment and resource development of surgical care in underdeveloped countries.
 
Continuing the trend, our surgery resident scholars will begin 2-year grant funded opportunities in Endocrine Surgery and in Vascular Surgery at Harvard Medical School affiliates Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital (Drs. Fuentes and Gigioli), as well as a 1-year research opportunity in minimally invasive surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida (Dr. Casella).

Schmidt College of Medicine Begins Offering Joint Degrees in Business and Health Administration

In recognition of the critical need for leaders in the practice of medicine and management, 
FAU's College of Medicine and College of Business have developed joint degree programs   
in medicine: the master of business administration (MD/MBA) and the master of health administration (MD/MHA). These joint degrees will provide future physicians with expertise in management and leadership to lead amidst the challenges of a rapidly changing healthcare system.

FAU Lab School District Team Wins Commissioner's Academic Challenge State Championship

The FAU Lab School District team won the Commissioner's Academic Challenge State Championship for their division, April 11-13. The Commissioner's Academic Challenge is a highly academic, statewide high school tournament. The districts are placed in three divisions; each team consists of six members and a coach. During the tournament, team members are asked questions from language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, the fine arts, world  languages (French and Spanish) physical educat ion, health, and technology.
Sarah Palumbo , FAU High Medical Pipeline student and member of the Robishaw lab, coached the Henderson High team to victory and Ajay Desai, FAU High School student and member of the Robishaw lab, was one of the six team members. The coaches and team members will receive "academic super bowl rings," and each team member will receive a $500 educational scholarship. The winning team had their photo taken with Mickey and Minnie as the competition was held at Disney World.

Also, this month, Ajay Desai received a Presidential Scholar Award of $3000 from FAU's president John Kelly for use toward his research during the fall semester.
FAU Recognizes National Health Care Decision Day

An interprofessional team composed of faculty from FAU's College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and School of Social Work, recognized National Health Care Decision Day on April 16. The group hosted information tables at several locations throughout the day, including each of the three colleges, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and the Palm Beach Atlantic School of Pharmacy, to educate and encourage completion of Advance Directives.
 
That evening, a conference titled "Compassionate Conversations for Advance Care Planning" was held in the Marleen and Harold Forkas Alumni Center. The FAU Office of Interprofessional Education and its Director, Dr. Jo Ann Bamdas, were instrumental in supporting the conference, which focused on interprofessional collaboration and practice. Over 40 health care professionals and community partners were in attendance. The conference included lectures and expert panel discussions from health care, legal and clergical professions. Conference attendees also participated in small group discussions and role-play on how to conduct compassionate conversations.
 
College of Medicine's Dr. George Luck, College of Nursing's Dr. Terry Eggenberger, and the School of Social Work's Dr. Heather Howard, addressed the audience during the conference. Other speakers from the College of Medicine included Dr. Mario Jacomino and Dr. Leonard Hock.

Pediatric Interest Group Sponsors Successful Blood Drive

The Schmidt College of Medicine Pediatric Interest Group, in partnership with FAU's AMSA chapter and OneBlood, sponsored a blood drive at the college on Tuesday, March 26. A total of 38 units were donated that day. A big thank you to all the people that made the event successful.
 
The Pediatric Interest group has partnered with OneBlood since October, 2014 to host blood drives at the college's specific location. For the last five years, they helped collect 385 units of blood, which equates to saving 1,155 lives. A majority of the Pediatric Interest Group's members have been active donors. These groups lead by example to promote the worthy cause of educating other students on the importance of donating blood.

Measles Vaccination: 'All for One and One for All'

Dr. Charles Hennekens recently published a commentary in the American Journal of Medicine on issues surrounding the clinical, ethical, public health and legal concerns raised by recent measles outbreaks in the United States.

Graduate Student Highlights

Congratulations to biomedical science alumna, Nicole Schuttenberg, who was accepted to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL. During her time at FAU, Nicole served as a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Ira Gelb and published a chapter with Dr. Charles Hennekens in Primary Care: Clinics in Office titled "Prescription of Aspirin and Statins in Primary Prevention" as the second author.
 
Nicole offers the following advice for fellow students beginning the application process for medical and other health professional school programs: "Do activities that you are passionate about and enhance your application positively. Volunteer somewhere that you can talk about in an interview passionately, and truly bring your characteristics to light when you speak of them."


Congratulations to MS Biomedical Science thesis student, 
Patrice Cherubin , who was accepted to the Howard University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, College of Osteopathic Medicine. Patrice was accepted to the MS Biomedical Science program in Spring 2018 as a thesis student in Dr. Marc Kantorow's lab and plans to graduate this summer.







PhD student in Integrative Biology Biomedical Science, Joshua Disatham, attended The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada, April 28-May 2. Joshua presented a poster titled: "Genome-wide chromatin mapping and transciptome analysis reveals chromatin regulation as a novel mechanism for controlling gene expression during lens differentiation."
