PUTTING OUR TALENTS TO WORK
TO HELP WHERE WE CAN

The Beardsley Committee is pleased to share the fabulous news that the Westbridge Coalition is building desks and chairs for students at the Beardsley School who need them - and delivering them to their doors. So far 10 - who knows how many more! The parents and children are ecstatic: a bright point to some pretty difficult school days ZOOMING and studying at home.
THIS WEDNESDAY JANUARY 27 - 7:00-8:30 PM

Our Council for Racial Justice, and the #BLM movie group invites you to watch and then discuss Speilberg's AMISTAD. Discussion on ZOOM HERE.
ADDICTION RECOVERY TALKING CIRCLE
LAUNCHING MONDAY FEBRUARY 1 - 7:00 PM
The Addiction Recovery Ministry is sponsoring a Recovery Talking Circle. “Recovery” is a process of moving toward healing. The creation of a peer circle of trust has been found to enhance recovery. Individuals and/or family members may share on a number of issues including compulsive behaviors related to alcohol, drugs, sex, shopping, gaming/gambling, screen overuse and eating.

Talking Circles are used by many indigenous people. The assumption is that each person has gathered critical learnings and wisdom from their life-long journeys. By creating a circle of trust formed around qualitative listening joined with shared vulnerability, real growth and support can take place.

The group will meet every other Monday at 7 PM, starting February 1. If interested, contact Jim Francek.
DVCC DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WORKSHOP
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6 - 10:00 AM
Domestic violence has been a growing problem through the pandemic.  The call to “stay home to stay safe” has posed dangerous scenarios for many domestic violence victims who feel isolated and are trapped at home with an abuser. Faith communities remain one of the few places where people can still connect - whether in person on online.

TUCW is sponsoring a workshop brought to us by The Domestic Violence Crisis Center, to help us recognize the signs of domestic violence and to help someone experiencing abuse: a lifesaving gift. ZOOM details to follow. For more details contact Wendy Levy, head of our Safer Congregations team.
REVEALING HISTORY: HOW WE GOT HERE, WHY IT MATTERS
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 7, 2021 – 10:40 AM
What are the obscured truths of how Black people have been controlled through history? How are they relevant today? Please join us as guest speaker EIliot Spillers of the Equal Justice Initiative discusses the organization’s work and the throughline from slavery to mass incarceration. EJI was founded by the distinguished Bryan Stevenson, whose book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption was the basis for the 2019 movie Just Mercy....

Our multimedia program, the first in a new series Revealing History: How We Got Here, Why It Matters, will also feature a selection of visual works as well as a performance by slam poetry champion, Joan ‘Lyric’ Leslie, illustrating the dehumanizing and terrifying consequences of white supremacy for Black Americans, past and present. We will also hear an original anthemic song of inspiration and hope called “Prayer,” written by TUCW member Andy Gundell, recorded with his American and South African colleagues, and featuring the voice of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The program will conclude at 11:45 and be followed by a 15 minute open mic discussion for those who would like to share their reflections. We hope you will join us for this revealing look at our shared American history.
