The chop chop messaging continues to drive Australian Mushrooms with digital and social media marketing underway. Some of the current marketing highlights include:  
  • The release of the updated Australian Mushrooms website, with a fresh new look and feel.
  • The continuation of the foodservice farm tours.
  • High engagement rates for Australian Mushrooms social media - Facebook and Instagram.
  • A successful social media "mushroom toastie" campaign.

Hort Innovation releases draft strategic themes

Hort Innovation has released the draft strategic themes that will form the basis of our next four-year strategic plan. These themes have been informed by consultation with over 300 industry participants including growers, researchers, delivery partners, government officials, industry representatives, peak bodies and staff across the country, and will provide direction for Hort Innovation going forward.

The draft strategic themes form the basis of the company's next four-year Strategic Plan. The release is another opportunity for you to help guide the strategic direction of the company that invests your levy into R&D, marketing and trade programs that help grow your industry.

There are two ways you can provide feedback on the draft strategic themes:
  1. Visit the Hort Innovation website and comment on the two questions in the feedback form.
  2. Direct contact - visit the Hort Innovation website, provide your contact details and someone at Hort Innovation will call you about your feedback, or if you prefer you can provide comments against the questions over the phone.

New Projects

MU17008 - Understanding and managing the impacts of climate change on Australian mushroom production. This project, managed by Applied Horticultural Research, will identify climate-related risks for Australian mushroom growers and work with industry to examine how to manage these risks. Further details on the project will be available in the next edition of the Australian Mushrooms Journal.
 
HA18002 - Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook 2018-19 to 2020-21. This project is funded by the Australian Government and is not funded through the mushroom industry levy. The current handbook was released in March and is available through the following LINK

A snapshot of mushroom news

Mushrooms in the News is a quick snapshot of news relevant to mushrooms. It could be a great recipe, a healthy reference, some research findings or some mushroom industry coverage. When we find it we will post it to the site and include it in the Monthly Update. If you have any comments or find anything that has been missed, please email and let us know.

Mushroom grower Jason Crosbie began selling mushrooms commercially through his business The Mushroom Connection in 2017, specialising in lesser-known varieties lion's mane, oyster and Shiitake Mushrooms. Mr Crosbie said he noticed not many people grow mushrooms in Australia and that there was a niche to be filled in the market. The Mushroom Connection produces around 30 kg of mushrooms each week supplying restaurants, café's, and wholesalers in Ballarat, Daylesford and Melbourne. Plans are underway to expand, with a particular focus on the lion's mane which is recognised for its flavour and medicinal properties.

China's changes epitomised by Australian mushroom About 30 minutes drive from Canberra, Gooda Creek claims to be one of the largest mushroom farms in Australia, producing some 16 types of mushrooms. Gooda Creek owner Wu Penghui, sold 200 tonnes of mushrooms last year, with sales this year expected to reach 300 tonnes potentially. The mushrooms are sold to a variety of customers, including parliament house and supermarkets like Costco and Coles. Having arrived from China in 2006, he now wants to set up a China-Australian mushroom association to invite Chinese experts to teach us and to promote our mushroom growing technique in Australia.

Medicinal mushrooms, edible beauty and ugly fruit: the big trends in food and beverage Global market research provider, Mintel claims the trends of convenience, sustainability and health and wellness are now shaping the food and beverage landscape. In terms of health food trends, it suggests that anything plant-based that is flavourful, nutritious and convenient will be on the menu for consumers. In particular, it points to mushrooms, with mushroom blended coffee appearing in English café's, and launches of mushroom snacks skyrocketing in China. Medicinal mushrooms such as Chaga, Rishi and Cordyceps are also increasingly linked to anti-inflammatory, immune boosting and memory enhancing benefits.

Woolworths launches free supplier app A new app created by Woolworths will allow suppliers to monitor the performance of products in individual stores directly. The Compass app, which is available at no cost, generates alerts when sales dropped below expectations, allowing supplies to fix out of stocks or merchandising issues. Drawing on smartphone technology, the app streamlines the jobs of third-party merchandisers with additional functions like the ability to print shelf labels and tickets.

Path is open for gene editing of plants in Australia On 10 April 2019, the Australian Government released amendments to the Gene Technology Regulations 2001 (Cth) (Regulations). The amendments change the law in Australia so that organisms (including plants, animals and human cell lines) developed using certain types of new gene editing techniques will no longer be classified and regulated as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) under the Gene Technology Act 2000 (Act). The amendments will allow animal and plant breeders to utilise newly available gene editing technology to develop and bring to market improved varieties at a quicker pace and a lower cost than traditional breeding methods.

Readers are told that mushrooms are a favourite addition to any meal and a super good for your health, being packed full of nutritious vitamin and minerals.

Three veggie-filled recipes for the cooler months Mushroom stroganoff with beef may seem like just another great recipe for the cooler months, but this article deserved inclusion purely based on the number of mushrooms required. While the recipe suggests 800g of mushrooms, the real kicker comes with the suggestion that the dish could be made vegetarian by omitting the beef and Worcestershire sauce and bumping up the mushrooms to 1kg. Much tastier, and much easier indeed!
 
Brisbane Customs House Mushrooms If consumers want fresh ingredients, then they can't go any fresher than this restaurant, with chefs of the Brisbane Customs House's Patina cultivating shiitake and oyster varieties within the humid environment of the basement's thick, stable sandstone walls. It started in 2016 with help from a local mushroom farmer who coached staff through proper mushroom care. The basement conditions pleasingly approach the perfect 85% humidity required for optimal mushroom growing. The mushrooms adorn the restaurant's signature Potato and Ricotta Gnocchi.
