June 1 to June 7, 2019

Construction is advancing along the Caltrain corridor! To accommodate the brand new electric trains, construction crews will began work in the four San Francisco tunnels starting in October 2018. That weekend work has concluded and Caltrain has restored regular weekend service to and from San Francisco.

Weekday Work

Construction Work
Monday, June 3 to Friday, June 7
  • 25th Avenue north: Crews will work on the retaining walls, including installing rebar and wall panels, as well as brackets on the wall for the future overhead catenary system for Caltrain Electrification.
  • 28th Avenue: Crews will work on the bent, forming and pouring columns. Crews will also be excavating, installing panels, and backfilling, and working on the platform ramps and walls.
  • 10th to 14th Avenues: Crews may even out soil distributed in this location and may be installing a drainage ditch to prevent any excess runoff and pooling caused by the rain. This work is in preparation for a future set-out track , as a previous one was removed due to the grade separation project.
  • Parking lots near 31st Avenue to the east of Hillsdale Station: Crews will be conducting AT&T utility relocation work.
Parking Impacts
On Saturday, June 1 to Friday, June 7, 2019, there will be no access to the Caltrain temporary parking lot from 31st Avenue. Vehicles can access the lot from 28th Avenue at S. Delaware. Please note some spaces in the temporary parking lot located on the eastside of the Hillsdale Station will be unavailable due to the construction work.

Separately, construction work for Caltrain Electrification will occur in the parking lot south of Hillsdale Avenue. For more information, visit CalMod.org/SanMateo.

We apologize for any inconvenience while this important safety improvement project is being constructed.

Background

Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at E. 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project  will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities at E. 28th Avenue.

Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2020. In order to maintain regular train service, some activities will be conducted during nights and weekends, outside of normal train service hours. Neighbors may experience construction noise and light during these times. Please note that the Hillsdale Station will temporarily close in the fall of 2019 for six months for the building of the new elevated Hillsdale Station. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Caltrain previously had a storage area (also called a set-out track) within San Mateo but it was recently removed due to the project. A set-out track creates a storage space for train maintenance equipment. It typically includes a track approximately 1000' in length and an access road. Equipment would be stored during the day shift or night shift on an as needed basis. The set-out track would likely be used approximately 1 to 2 days per week by maintenance crews.

To date, the work that has occurred at the potential set-out track area consists of distributing soil at the location.

In order to make the location a functional set-out track area, additional installation work would be needed. A construction contract for additional installation work has not been issued and no installation work is expected for several months. Prior to the start of any installation work, Caltrain will communicate with residents, businesses and other interested members of the public to discuss the project in more detail.

A community meeting for the set-out track will be on June 11, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at San Mateo City Hall. For more information please visit www.Caltrain.com/HP_MaintenanceArea

pcepCaltrain Electrification

Caltrain Electrification

Caltrain  Electrification is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization program which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor from San Francisco's 4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.

The primary purpose of Caltrain Electrification is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better address Peninsula commuters' vision of increased service and improved travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved system operations.

For information on upcoming community construction update meetings, please visit the Caltrain Electrification Project events page at www.CalMod.org/Events.
