From the Rector
The Reverend C. Phillip Craig, Jr.
With Much Gratitude
Jennifer and I were graced with the love, support, and FUN that AEP specializes in as we marked our 25th wedding anniversary. Reaffirming our vows at Ascension surrounded by so many of you, and the care of the Altar Guild complete with flowers for Jennifer to carry, coupled with SuEllen's leadership, was just perfect. She might have gone off script with a "you may kiss the groom" command, to Jennifer's everlasting enjoyment and gratitude!

Our deep thanks, for the manner by which we (and our children) receive God's grace from our parish family.
We were able to expand our anniversary celebration into four days together on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Former parishioners Dan and Marlee Musser generously facilitated some time for us at their Grand Hotel. We loved stepping back in time to a place where no cars are allowed (only horse drawn carriages, bicycles and walking), and guests dress formally for meals. We savored every moment together, as a beautiful capstone to our celebration.
While living in Portland, Marlee and Dan often mentioned how much Ascension Parish reminded them of the tiny Episcopal church on Mackinac Island. Of course, then, Jennifer and I found our way to historic Trinity Episcopal Church. Founded as a parish in 1837, their "new" sanctuary was built in 1882. We were delighted to see another beautiful worship space from that era (as our Ascension Episcopal Parish was built only seven years later). Unlike much of the island, which closes doors for the winter, Trinity is a year round parish.
The best vacations are ones that involve gratitude for being home. Yes, Jennifer and I had the best time away. And we returned both renewed and reaffirmed, with a shared love and appreciation for our blessings - including all of you.

Keep the faith!

Special Guest - this Sunday Morning
Preaching and
Speak Up Presentation!
This Sunday Morning, October 13th, we are most fortunate to have as our guest preacher the Diocese of Oregon's Archdeacon and Canon for Administration Carter Hawley.

In addition to preaching at both services, Carter will be speaking from 9:15 am to 9:45 am on the important ministry of the Vocational Deacon, both in our Diocese and the greater Church.

Join in, as we welcome Carter to the Ascension Parish family.

It’s not you. It’s us. There has been no View since mid-August, when Emma Riggle stepped down from her position as the Communications Coordinator (don’t worry, she’s firmly planted at the organ and in all Minister of Music activities).

We thought we could cobble something together between Fr. Craig and me...but, mid-August is also the creep of the back-to-school crunch that is all-consuming and you just hope you remember to eat a hearty breakfast by at least 2 pm.

But hey! We’ve managed to get the bulletins printed, so we’re not doing too badly. Plus, parishioner Kris Vanberg, who now, lucky for us, lives only a block from the church, has graciously agreed to spend Wednesdays from 9:00 - 1:00pm working at the church. Completing the bulletins takes up some time but she’s industrious and agreed to venture into The View creation, especially since it means she has less time to organize the unwieldy historical files, or, worse, the vestry papers.

Which means, welcome back to The View! We hope to get back to somewhat regular programming…

Sally
From the Minister of Music
Emma Mildred Riggle, M.M.
Dear Parish family,

I’d like to thank you for your flexibility in regard to my recital with Hannah Brewer, which was originally scheduled for October 4. Instead of singing music by Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, I found myself huddled in bed with a fever and lots of sudafed, so it’s wonderful that Hannah and I were able to reschedule our performance!

Our recital, Clearings in the Sky: Music by 19th & 20th Century Women , is now scheduled for Friday, November 8 at 7 P.M. at Ascension (an intimate musical salon evening in our parlor) and Saturday, November 9 at 4 P.M. at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church (a formal recital in their beautiful sanctuary). To learn more, please feel free to visit AEP’s Music page

I’d appreciate your prayers for recovery, since quite a lot of the work I do is difficult without a voice! But I feel pretty certain I can expect to recover from the flu before November 8, at which point we’ll offer you a better recital than we could have done otherwise!

Soli Deo gloria,
Ascension Choir Rehearsals

The Ascension Choir will soon begin rehearsals for the Advent season, starting on October 20. Rehearsals take place in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings at 9 A.M., between the two morning services. All aged teen and above are welcome to participate, and it is not necessary to attend every rehearsal - the choir director will be happy to work with you if you need any extra review! It's also not necessary to be a member of Ascension to sing in the choir.

This Advent season, the choir will sing an Advent Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 8, and a Christmas Eve Festival of Lessons and Carols on the evening of Dec. 24. If you would like to sing with us, please email Emma, our Minister of Music, at  music@ascensionepiscopalparish.org , so she can have accurate numbers and have scores prepared for you!

A Lloyd Family Visit
We were all blessed on Sunday morning with the delightful surprise of having Lucy Lloyd and her daughters Mary and Margaret visit. Back from Kentucky for a few days to connect with local friends, they wanted to include the AEP family in their tour.

Lucy reports that all are well, as they continue their big transition. She appreciates our loving support, and welcomes our continued thoughts and prayers.
