SPS Summer Math IXL Challenge: Weekly Update
1st Place (hours spent practicing):

The rising 8th grade has roared into first place, jumping from just under 3 hours of practice last week up to over 20 hours of practice this week!!! Great job, although it is largely due to the efforts of one student in particular as we will see below. Sill, only 25% of this class is practicing IXL right now. Will these students get to our goal of 15 hours of practice this summer? Time will tell.

2nd Place:

The rising 7th grade has moved into 2nd place with over 17 hours of practice- great job! This is much improved from a week ago, however, only 20% of the students in this class are practicing their math!

3rd Place:

The rising 6th grade has dropped from 1st place a week ago to 3rd place, even though they did increase their collective hours significantly from over 4 hours of practice to over 12 hours of class-wide practice this past week. Good work; but it appears this class will need to up its efforts if it wishes to remain competitive as only 30% of the class is practicing their math!

4th Place:

Even though they were in 2nd place last week, the rising 5th grade has slipped into 4th place with over 9 hours of practice so far this summer. However, there is a bright spot with this class: the number of students practicing math jumped from 14% to 33% in this class. This class could be the dark horse that pulls off a surprise upset by the end of the summer!

Individual Commendations

Here are the top ranked students by grade level in terms of time spent practicing and math skills mastered:

5th grade: Ronan Fowler (over 2 hours of practice and 20 skills mastered)
6th Grade: George Stewart (almost 5 hours of practice and 53 skills mastered)
7th Grade: Michelle Lu (over 9 hours of practice and 29 skills mastered)
8th Grade: Jordyn Rendfrey (over 12 hours of practice and 50 skills mastered)

Remember, the goal is for each student in grades 5-8 to practice 15 hours worth of Math by the first day of school, which is September 5th. This is voluntary, but we believe it to be highly beneficial as Math IXL yielded excellent results this past year in the current grade 6 where it was piloted for two days during the school week. Slow, steady, and consistent practice in Math IXL on grade level questions or above and yield wonderful improvements!!!

This is also a great opportunity to practice several virtues: patience, perseverance, creativity, problem solving, and of course, "cheerful" labor!

Have a great day!
