Last week, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the Riverdale Park area. In response, MDA will utilize Ultra-Low Volume truck-based mosquito spraying within a three-quarter mile radius of the positive sample in Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, Edmonston and Rogers Heights. West Nile virus is spread to people from mosquito bites; for more information about West Nile virus, including signs and symptoms,

In an effort to reduce mosquitoes in our area, MDA conducts weekly mosquito activity surveillance and mosquito spraying and larvaciding throughout the City and the County. Larviciding is a treatment made by MDA personnel to known areas of standing water to control mosquito larva preventing the development into adult mosquitoes and is done every 4-6 weeks. Spraying for adult mosquitoes may occur in the City (weather permitting) after dusk on Wednesday evenings. MDA does not spray individual properties, rather they treat neighborhoods that meet certain thresholds. For more information about mosquito spraying in the City, please

You can help protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellents and wearing long, loose-fitting and light colored clothing particularly at dusk and after when the primary vector is most active. You can also reduce the amount of mosquitoes in your yard or area by removing stagnant water sources (mosquitoes breeding sources) by tipping over or emptying all water-holding containers (tarps, bowls, pots, toys, bird
baths, etc). For permanent areas of standing water (ponds, rain barrels, etc), contact the City's Department of Public Works for mosquito torpedoes that target and kill mosquito larvae.

The finance windows at City Hall will close at 4:30pm today, Friday August 3, 2018 and website payments (online parking ticket payments, rental listings, etc.) will be down today beginning at 5pm for necessary system maintenance. The maintenance will last for approximately five hours.

I-495 and I-270 Managed Lanes Study

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will be doing more outreach activities for the community to engage and comment on the
I-495 & I-270 Managed Lanes Study over the next few months. They will be attending various community events including the El Sa
lvadoran Festival in Rockville, the Prince George's County Fair, Hispanic Festival in Adelphi, and Rocktobierfest in Rockville.

From May 26 through August 19, 2018, the Downtown College Park Garage and the City Hall Lot will offer free parking Monday through Friday after 5:00 pm and all-day on Saturdays and Sundays.
Try a new restaurant for dinner or visit a new store during these free parking summer weekends and nights in Downtown College Park!

On Tuesday, July 31, The Hotel at the University of Maryland hosted the Maryland Opportunity Zones Conference. The Conference shed light on an exciting new initiative meant to spur meaningful development, promote entrepreneurship and create jobs across the state. A large amount of the City is designated as an Opportunity Zone and City staff was on hand to learn more about how the City can benefit. Experts were brought from both the private and public sector to discuss the initiative including Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford, Secretary of the Department of Commerce Mike Gill, Co-Founder and President of the Economic Innovation Group John Lettieri, and Managing Principal of CohnReznick Baltimore Ira Weinstein. There are still criteria and requirements being fleshed out for the program but it will certainly add another exciting tool to the College Park Economic Development Toolkit.

Department of Public Works
|
The City is offering 50-gallon rain barrels for $72 while supplies last. Once installed, Prince George’s County residents can apply for a
Rain Check Rebate, off-setting most of the cost! Residents can purchase and pick up their rain barrels from the Department of Public Works during work hours. Contact the Department for further information. Rain barrels come with a cover, body and hose. A diverter kit is not included.
Historic Window Repair Work at Old Parish House will continue through September. The window restoration work will use traditional Dutchman repairs wherever possible to preserve the integrity of the original wood. Any new paint will be carefully matched. Restoration work on exterior wood doors, wood trim and wood siding will utilize, as much as possible, the existing structures and materials.
For all special or bulk trash collections, appointments are required. Before placing bulk trash, appliances, brush, or electronic recycling on the curb, call the Department to schedule an appointment.
Yard Waste carts are currently available for City residents. The beige yard waste carts are offered to City residents for $25.00. Contact the Department for more information.

City of College Park property owners can utilize the Tree Canopy Enhancement Program (TCEP) for reimbursement of the cost of an approved tree up to $150.00 annually for tree(s) planted on their residential lot. Delivery is available Monday-Friday for an additional fee. Compost is $28.00 per cubic yard and wood mulch is $12.00 per cubic yard. Material may be picked up at Public Works, during business hours.

Weekly Highlights of Contract Police Activity
July 20 - 26, 2018

7/20
Contract officers conducted multiple premise checks in the City including student housing and the bar area during bar closing.
7/21
Contract officers stopped a vehicle and during the traffic stop Marijuana was located. A citation in lieu of arrest was issued for one occupant. The remaining occupants were documented on a field observation report.
7/22
Contract officers responded to the Holiday Inn for a report of a theft with patrol officers. Contract officers were first on scene and determined that the theft was the result of a paid female escort service and no crime occurred.
7/23
Contract officers were the first on the scene of a disorderly call in the 9600 block of 52nd Avenue. Officers cleared the call without incident.
7/24
While on routine patrol, contract officers located a suspicious male in the parking lot of the Sakura Seafood Buffet. Contact was made with the individual who was later determined to be homeless. He was advised and sent on his way.
7/25
Contact officers responded to the 7000-block of Dartmouth Avenue for a suicidal subject. Contract officers assisted patrol officers with a canvass of the area for the subject.
7/26
Contract Officer conducted a long-term traffic enforcement operation at Berwyn Road and 49th Avenue. 23 vehicles were stopped resulting in 21 warnings and two citations being issued for failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to obey a traffic control device

National Night Out

National Night Out (NNO) is a community-police partnership that provides a unique opportunity for residents to increase awareness about crime prevention and safety, get to know their neighbors, and meet local law enforcement and other public safety officers with the goal of preventing crime and drug activities in their neighborhoods.
Join your neighbors, elected officials and law enforcement officers at one of these three locations for food, fun, activities, community engagement and neighborhood walks.
- College Park Woods Community Park: 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. 9119 St. Andrews Place
- Lakeland Park: 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
- The event begins at Lakeland Park (4901 Lakeland Rd) and ends with a lighted walk at 8:30 p.m. via the Trolley Trail to James Adams Park
- Duvall Field: 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. 9119 Rhode Island Ave
We also ask residents to turn on their porch or lamppost lights from dusk to midnight on August 7.

Airmail Centennial Celebration

Celebrate with the College Park Aviation Museum as they mark the 100th anniversary of the first airmail delivery by the US Postal Service. There will be engaging hands-on activities for all ages. Get an up and close and personal look at the Curtiss Jenny and other historic planes flying in for the day. Entertainment and food trucks will be onsite.
