Kitsap Humane Society takes Lead
in Animal Welfare, Lifesaving

Kitsap Humane Society presented at the Best Friends Animal Society national conference July 19-21 in Los Angeles, which brings together animal welfare organizations from across the nation to share strategies and exchange ideas to help make the U.S. no-kill by 2025.

presented the “Adopters Welcome: Re-imagining Your Pet Adoption Program” workshop, which engaged about 100 participants in ways to save more animals through progressive and customer-friendly adoption policies. KHS provided one-on-one consultations during the “Ask an Expert” sessions, helping other organizations with adoption, foster, and surrender questions.
“It was such an honor for KHS to be represented as a leader in animal welfare on the national stage," Smith said, "and for our hard work over the past five years to serve as a road map and inspiration for other shelters and rescues who want to grow their lifesaving impact.”
On the statewide level, KHS is a proud founding member of the newly launched Pet Alliance of Washington, whose goal is to collaborate with the shared mission of saving more animals' lives across the state.
“KHS is excited to work with other animal welfare organizations to improve the save rate for animals through transfer partnerships and mentoring," said Sarah Moody-Cook, KHS' assistant director of animal welfare.
"This coalition is a great way to build relationships that can take our lifesaving work to a new level," she said. "As a leader in progressive animal sheltering, we are in a wonderful position to help other organizations improve their lifesaving programs and employ animal welfare best practices.”

We're Taking Over Kitty Hall!
|
|
Kitsap Humane Society (KHS) cats and kittens are taking over City Hall!
In August KHS will be turning City Halls into Kitty Halls on Aug. 14 in Poulsbo, Aug. 21 in Port Orchard, and Aug. 28 on Bainbridge Island.
KHS will also be accepting donated items from
the wish list
to support the cats and kittens, including wet and dry cat food, cat toys and cat litter.
KHS took in over 3,900 cats and kittens in 2017 and is on track to take in at least that many kitties again in 2018. The Kitty Hall events are one way that KHS is engaging more with community members across Kitsap County on issues related to cats and cat ownership.

KHS Animal Control Accepts Lip Sync Challenge!
|
|
Kitsap Humane Society's Animal Control Officers take their jobs seriously. Whether rescuing injured or abused pets, or retrieving lost pigs, goats, peacocks or turtles, this amazing, compassionate team of officers is on it.
They also like to get their groove on, no dancin' shoes needed. So when their friends at Metro Animal Services challenged them to the wildly viral law enforcement lip sync challenge, there was no question they would accept.
They went out to the pasture to practice a bit, came up with a doozy of a routine, and the rest is history. They got a whopping 49,000 views on Facebook and even made the KIRO-TV news in Seattle!!!

Adorable Adoptable
Meet Hope!
|
This month’s adorable adoptable is Hope! Hope is about 5 years old and has a beautiful grey and white coat and striking green eyes.
Hope the friendliest cat you will ever meet - she runs over to greet you at the door with a “meow” in hello. Hope enjoys curling up on your lap for snuggles and pets.
Hope can be a little piggy at times and likes to follow you around begging for food. This fun, playful girl can’t wait to go home with you!

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Karen!
|
Karen has been volunteering at KHS for almost two years, and fostered 26 cats and kittens. She is always present with a huge smile and ready to share something both helpful and encouraging!
Besides fostering and volunteering with both cats and dogs, Karen is a volunteer adoption counselor and helps with both onsite and offsite events.
Karen is a weekly presence at the shelter, helping animals find homes, socializing cats, walking dogs, and just being ready to help out wherever she is needed.
Most every department at the shelter has been touched by her positivity. We love you, Karen! Thanks for all you do!

$20 Spay/Neuter for Cats Aug. 28!
|
|
Cat owners on limited incomes can spay and neuter their cats for just $20 each during Cat Fix Day Aug. 28 at Kitsap Humane Society. No appointment is necessary, and cats from Kitsap and Mason counties are welcome.
Fees are waived for spay/neuter of feral or community cats, including ear-tipping and rabies vaccinations. Cat Fix Day is limited to the first 50 walk-ins, so arrive on time!
The reduced spay/neuter fee is made possible thanks to a partnership between Kitsap Humane Society and South County Cats.

KHS Receives Grant for Senior Pet Care
|
|
When senior pets come through our doors, they are often in need of medical care as well as loving homes, and at KHS we make sure they get both!
Thanks to a $7,500, one-year grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization, we now have more funds to provide medical care to at-risk senior dogs at the shelter. KHS was among 66 applicants out of 309 to receive a Grey Muzzle grant award for medical care for senior dogs.
Many seniors need extra care before they can be adopted. These cherished companions may need surgery, diagnostics/lab work and medication to keep them comfortable or to manage age-related chronic conditions.
