Important Glen-L Announcement
John & Gayle Brantuk, Glen-L Marine

Friends of Glen-L,

We have some exciting news! On March 1, 2021, all of the Glen-L operations will be transferred to Josh Colvin of Duckworks in Port Townsend, Washington.

I’ve known Josh for a number of years as we advertise in his magazine, Small Craft Advisor. In 2016, Josh took over the operations of Duckworks (aka Duckworks Magazine). They currently sell plans, kits and boatbuilding supplies as we do, so it’s a perfect fit.

The reason for this move is because John and I have been running Glen-L on our own and it’s a lot to do. Honestly, I personally find it hard to keep up with everything. Plus, we're getting older (wow, I hate to admit that!) So, we’ve decided to retire from Glen-L and see what wonderful journey God has for us in this next chapter of life.

I know many of you personally and when we initially thought about retiring, it was quite emotional. Glen-L Marine isn’t just a business for me, it’s been my entire life for as long as I can remember. So really, this is more of a transition for Glen-L than anything else as we're just passing the torch, so to speak. Josh and his team plan on keeping things the same for Glen-L as far as our website, store, Forum etc. for a while. This will give them time to see how things work and then integrate it into their system as needed.

So, what does this mean for you? First of all, John and I will be available for quite a while to help with the transition and also answer questions when needed for you all. And, I’m sure the folks at Duckworks will provide excellent support as well. Our Forum will continue to operate so you can connect with other builders. And, one of our builders also has a Facebook group for Glen-L builders which is pretty active: https://www.facebook.com/groups/771412109591682

During the transfer of our business on March 1. 2021, our sites and store will remain open. However, shipping of the orders placed online may be delayed during the transition. Josh and his team will work hard at getting all the orders shipped out as soon as possible. And, once Duckworks takes over, they will need your continued kind patience as they get everything in place.

We are at the same time scared to death and excited about this new journey. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Warmly,
John & Gayle Brantuk
A letter from the new Glen-L Marine Owners...

After an ill-fated attempt to build a raft in the fourth grade—which I’d imagined I’d use as a platform for my snorkeling expeditions—my next significant boat building project was from a set of Glen-L plans and patterns.

My Uncle Craig and I had decided we wanted a boat to explore a particular mountain lake and the rocky island near its center. Initially we looked at simple skiffs made from one or two sheets of plywood, but as our dreams of potential cruising grounds expanded, so too did the size of our boat.

After countless hours poring over a dog-eared copy of Glen-L’s Book of Boat Designs (has any other catalog ever offered so much joy and pleasant daydreaming?) we settled on the shippy little 15-foot Minuet, with its bowsprit, two sleeping berths, and four port lights.

I remember we sent a letter to the company asking about Minuet’s capability. Could she handle coastal cruises? How about taking her offshore? “Well,” came the reply, “that really depends on the nut behind the wheel.” With that, we placed our order and were soon cutting out parts.

I had no way of knowing it at the time, but my life of researching boats was just beginning, as not too many years later we launched Small Craft Advisor magazine, and in the 21 years since, I’ve tested and reviewed more than 120 different boat designs.

A few years ago we purchased Duckworks Boat Builders Supply and began selling plans, hardware, and boat-building supplies from our warehouse and office alongside the magazine. While the companies operate somewhat independently, it’s been a good symbiotic pairing. So when Gayle told me recently she and John were thinking about the possibility of selling Glen-L, it was an easy decision. After all, we’re already in the same business and it would be hard to imagine a better fit.

I’m excited to announce a deal was struck, and as of March 1st, we will assume ownership of Glen-L and its remarkable catalog of boat plans and publications. Gayle and John have promised to remain available, not just to help with the transition, but also to check-in with all of you from time to time. In the spirit of continuity, our agreement includes a lifetime royalty for Gayle and John on Glen-L book and plan sales so that we might all share in future success.

As longtime fans of Glen-L Marine Designs we don’t aspire to make any drastic course changes, but we do plan to use our resources and talents to add new designs, publications, and products to the already fantastic variety of offerings and we certainly welcome your suggestions.

In the meantime, we hope you’ll bear with us as we get everything up and running here in Port Townsend, Washington. Thanks for your support and Happy 2021.
