Highlights for May 27, 2019 at Chase Secondary School

The community engagement portion of the regular Public Board Meeting included a community dinner prepared by
Fran Connet
. Chase Secondary students and staff held an Open House for Trustees and District Staff demonstrating their learning in biology, natural resource science, chemistry, art, culinary arts, music and more.

PUBLIC INQUIRIES, PETITIONS & WRITTEN PRESENTATIONS

The Chase Outdoor School Committee presented their proposal for a K-6 school of choice, where 80 per cent or more of the day is spent outdoors. With strong parent and community support, suitable diverse eco-systems close to the community, and the ability to draw students from a wide area, the group suggests that Chase is an ideal location for an outdoor school. The Board of Education referred the proposal to staff for review prior to discussing at a future Public Board Meeting.

REPORTS FROM SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

During 2018-2019, SD73 was one of 13 districts in the Province to participate in the Communicating Student Learning Pilot for K-9 Schools. The pilot will continue in 2019-2020 but will be limited to schools with entire staffs who are interested in participating. Currently seven schools are committed to the reporting pilot for the coming school year, with more expected to join by the end of June 2019.

Each year the BC Liquor Distribution Branch fundraises on behalf of the safe grad activities in their community. This year $13,877.84 will be distributed to the 10 Safe Grad events throughout the district. Events planned include rafting on the Kumsheen, dances and carnivals. All Safe Grad events are sponsored by independent parent committees.

Board Authority/Authorized Courses
School districts or independent schools develop Board/Authority Authorized (BAA) courses to help meet local community needs while providing choice and flexibility for students. After review by the Education Committee of the Whole, the following courses were approved by the Board:
- Rugby Skills 11
- Rugby Skills 12
Hockey Skills 10-12, Psychology 11, and Human Performance 12 were sent back to staff for a review of teacher qualifications prior to Board Approval. Once approved by the
Ministry
, the course outlines will be posted to the SD73 website.

OECD Conference Held in Conjunction with BC Ed
|

were among 400 delegates from around the world attending the Organization for Education and Community Development Conference (OECD) in conjunction with the BC Ed Conference, May 22-24. Dallas Elementary second-year teacher
Cecilia Brar
presented an ignite session on classroom pedagogy, showcasing education in the province of BC.
During a meeting with the BC contingent on the second day, the focus was on moving the BC education system forward. Educational leaders participated in 27 conversations that were synthesized into three main themes for future consideration: diversity and equity, an evidenced-informed system, and preparing for the impact of artificial intelligence on society. noted that during the conference the OECD Launched their Vision for Learning 2030 which focussed on well-being for students, the community and the planet.

From Trustee Sim
The Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department commissioned mugs from Clearwater Secondary School (CSS) to mark 50 years of community service. CSS then gave the proceeds to a developing country. CSS earned a berth in the Provincial Girls Single A Soccer Finals. Within a week the community raised the $7,500 needed for the team to travel to the tournament, with some funds coming from the BC Games Legacy Fund. This is the first time, CSS has made it to the Provincials. Way to go, girls!

Barriere Secondary kicked off the SD73 grad season on Friday, May 17 with 25 graduates crossing the stage. Community scholarships totalled $76,000 which is a remarkable sum of money to be distributed to students seeking post-secondary studies. Valedictorians
Emma Hamblin
and
Samantha Jones
were among those who said the success of the graduating class of 2019 is because of the many options available to them. Students valued participating in programs such as RCMP Academy, Junior Wildfire Boot Camp, and Heavy Metal Rocks.
