School Rocks Backpack Giveaway

Students in Barrow County are once again benefitting from The Cellular Connection (TCC) annual nationwide School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Since 2013, TCC has donated more than 360,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to ensure children are prepared for the start of the school year. This year at TCC in Winder, 210 new backpacks with school supplies for Barrow's children were given away on July 23rd at the 55 East May St. location. Additionally, 40 backpacks were given to the Barrow County School System (BCSS) just in time for the start of the school year. TCC is the largest Verizon authorized retailer in the United States. Scott Moorhead, the CEO of TCC said, "It brings our employees immense joy to give back to the young children in their communities, and we are proud to put so many smiles on the faces of deserving families, who have made this annual event such a success."

Statham Elementary Wins Prep Rally Cheer Contest

"Intentional Instruction" was the theme at the annual Barrow County Back to School "Prep Rally" for the 2018-2019 school year. With clouds overhead, but sunshine in our hearts, The Big Yellow Limousines provided transportation to and from the Innovation Amphitheater for faculty and staff. Local officials, dignitaries and guests also joined the fun.

Activities included the Barrow Brigade Presenting the Colors and Pledge. Haley Mitchell and the "Sleepy Teachers" performed the National Anthem. Dr. Ed Nichols provided inspirational insight on being an educator and said "be the thermostat, not the thermometer, and pour your heart and soul into your students". Teacher of the Year Kimberly Garren reminded us that relationships and family are the secret to successful teaching.

Freddy's Frozen Custard provided treats to Yargo Elementary and Haymon Morris Middle (Student attendance), Bethlehem Elementary and Alternative Program (Staff attendance), Bramlett Elementary (Transportation), and Winder Elementary (School Nutrition) to celebrate having the highest attendance in the 2017-2018 school year.
