A Message From The Superintendent's Office...

Dear Falcon Community,

The school year always seems to move at an accelerated speed. This is probably due to the exciting student and staff events throughout the school year that gives credence to the saying, "time flies when you are having fun."  This has certainly been a fun year considering the outstanding accomplishments of our students, some of which are listed in the pages of this Falcon Flyer. It is important, though, that every student feels a sense of accomplishment and pride for enriching his/her knowledge and improving his/her skills as a student and as a lifelong learner. Our teachers, support staff and administrators should also be proud for guiding our students' learning.

Parents can certainly enrich their child's knowledge during the summer by reading to their children, visiting the Township Library, engaging their children in conversations about new places or events during vacation and providing unstructured time for children to think, play and be creative.

Our high school seniors will soon be departing us for college and/or a career. I feel confident that our students are prepared to meet the challenges ahead and be successful in the next stage of their education and in life. I also welcome our seniors to stay in contact with us, so that they can share their successes and challenges with us and their younger peers.

Please be sure to note the times and locations for our various moving up ceremonies and graduation. If you need more information for these, or any other events, please contact the Principal of your child's school.

In this edition of the Falcon Flyer, you will find information regarding the incredible learning opportunities taking place everyday in our schools. In addition, you will find information about school and community events. Please also visit our website, District App, Facebook and Twitter to stay informed of District happenings.

In honor of Father's Day, I wish all of our Fathers a very happy and enjoyable Father's Day.

Respectfully yours,

Michael Kozak

BARCLAY BROOK'S WELLNESS WEEK

Barclay Brook celebrated Wellness Week from Tuesday 5/29 through Monday 6/4.  Over the course of the week students were encouraged to dress for an active lifestyle and bring in a healthy snack each day. During the day they engaged in daily active brain breaks and yoga poses. Instead of completing typical homework, students were encouraged to engage in at least 30 minutes of activity each day. Our bulletin board in our front entrance transformed into a showcase of the many ways our students keep fit. One of the highlights of the week was encouraging children to try new foods each day. With the help of Barclay Brook and Brookside PTA volunteers, students had the opportunity to sample a different vegetable or fruit each day. It's amazing what the promise of a sticker for trying and positive peer pressure will do! Over the course of the week, we served carrots, broccoli, sugar snap peas, cucumbers, and blueberries. Some of the students had never tried some of the foods before and were surprised to learn that they truly enjoyed them and we had many students ask for second and third helpings!

ANNUAL MONROE SENIOR VS. SENIOR EVENT

The annual senior-senior event was held on May 30, 2018. This event is such a wonderful opportunity for our community. Seniors from the high school were partnered with seniors from Monroe Township at large, to enjoy a day of activity and lunch.

Four different events were held: Bocce, Shuffleboard, Bowling and Pickle Ball.

All seniors had a fantastic time and truly enjoyed getting to spend time getting to know each other.

MTMS PTO

Thank you to all the Parents, School Staff, and Community for your ongoing support for the MTMS PTO fundraisers. The PTO fundraisers help support programs and activities which help to promote the welfare of the children in school, home and community.  This is accomplished through the united efforts of all the parents and the entire Middle School staff.  Without your support, we would not have been able to bring all those extras to our students!

Below are just some of the events/activites that the MTMS PTO has funded through the school year:
  • Upgraded the speaker system in the gym (which is used for pep rallies, graduation, etc. Cost of $20,000)
  • 2 Scholastic Bookfairs enhanced the building and classroom Libraries
  • 7th and 8th Grade Dances (free admission for all students)
  • A Bingo Night for 6th and 7th grade students (free admission for students participating)
  • 8th Grade Volleyball Madness
  • End of PARCC Treat (Four Boys Ice Cream) for all students
  • Student ID Lanyards for 6th grade students
  • 7th and 8th Grade Play Playbill
  • MTHS High School Scholarships for 2 former MTMS students
In addition, the PTO Grant committee approved the following 2 grants for this school year:  1) $800 for the Cooking with Friends Group. The goal of this group is to continue to build connections for our self contained classes with the general education classes by cooking some treats together. 2)  $575 for banners for Band and Jazz to be used at in and out of school district performances.

As a reminder, please continue to help us fundraise through the summer by continuing to clip box tops and shop through our Amazon link on the website at  www.mtmspto.org.  These are simple ways to help us raise some extra dollars.

Good luck to our 8th graders as they move on to High School! We wish them all the best as they continue on their future endeavors!

Have a safe and happy summer!

Thanks!

Wellness Week Spirit Day Challenge at Applegarth School

A staple of the Applegarth Wellness Week is a Spirit Day where students dress up to celebrate healthy living. This year's spirit day came with a special challenge. Classes picked a class color and once it was chosen, the teacher posed the challenge, bring in a healthy snack that matches the class color. The school was filled with all the colors of the rainbow and healthy snacks from blueberries to red radishes to green pears.

The rest of the week, students participated in daily Wellness Week brain breaks, exercise sessions, mindfulness activities and even a healthy food poster contest. Teachers were treated daily with Wellness Week goodies in their mailboxes and they ended Wellness Week with a healthy staff breakfast.

Wellness Week has become a welcomed addition to the Applegarth end of year activities. It is something students and staff look forward to every year.
