AB 1871 (Bonta): Don't Keep Us in Suspense!
AB 1871 (Bonta)
will guarantee that low-income students in charter schools have access to at least one free or reduced-price meal each school day -- just like low-income students in all other California public schools. The bill is now sitting in the Senate Appropriations suspense file. We're gearing up to get it out!
What's Next?
On August 17, the Senate Appropriations Committee, chaired by Senator Anthony Portantino, will announce which bills make it off suspense and onto the Senate Floor. The committee will likely make its decisions by August 10. We have until then to make sure AB 1871 lives on!

Farm Bill Update: Four CA Representatives Named to Conference Committee
Four California Representatives have been selected to participate in negotiations to reconcile the starkly divergent Farm Bills passed by the Senate and House earlier this summer.

New Policy Brief: What's Next For Drinking Water Access in California Public Schools?
Children spend substantial time in schools, and many arrive at school inadequately hydrated. Excellent access to drinking water in schools encourages the consumption of drinking water over sugar-sweetened beverages, which offers a host of benefits, including physical health and mental function.
CFPA's newly released policy brief, What's Next For Drinking Water Access in California Public Schools?, presents findings from an evaluation of drinking water access in schools before and after implementation of SB 1413 and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, and proposes three policy recommendations to continue building on California's historical leadership and make drinking water accessible and safe in our schools.

New Report Finds California Cities Among the Nation's Most at Risk of Hunger
Also among the report's findings:
- The food hardship rate for households with children rose to a considerably higher level, from 17.5 percent in 2016 to 18.4 percent in 2017. Nationally, the food hardship rate for households with children is 1.3 times higher than for households without children.
- California is home to two of the hungriest cities in America, Bakersfield and Fresno, which ranked #1 and #3, respectively, among the top 20 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) represented.
FRAC President Jim Weill highlighted the need for a strong SNAP program, the nation's first line of defense against hunger, to support low-income Americans who are still struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table.
"The high rates of food hardship underscore the need for Congress to pass a Farm Bill that protects and strengthens SNAP," added Weill. "Otherwise, we will see worse health and hunger for struggling children, seniors, working families, and others across the country," said Weill.
