Thank You
Thank you to everyone that reached out to my family on the loss of my brother Marvin Scott. You gave us great comfort and peace as I could feel the Heart of Longmont beating very strong and true. My family is truly blessed by your outpouring.

Happy Birthday
Heart of Longmont Methodist Church
Our History (Continued)
On May 27, 1883, a new church building was dedicated. The building on Terry Street between Third & Fourth Avenues remains and Ahlberg Funeral Chapel currently occupies this building. The building has been remodeled but original architecture remains intact. An early day member recounts that “it was lit by three beautiful brass chandeliers, all fueled by kerosene”. Another account relates that the sanctuary was heated by a central floor furnace which at times provided much entertainment for children. During Christmas rehearsals, to the consternation of parents and clergy, they floated feathers in the rising hot air above the furnace.

By 1902, in less than 20 years since the move to Terry Street, and in its first 32 years of charter, membership had exceeded the 300 mark. Larger quarters were again needed. Ground-breaking ceremonies were held in May of 1903, at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Terry Street. The first of two additions – Wesley Hall- was added in 1924 to accommodate the growing membership. It also served as the community recreation center. According to people who remember this time, basketball was highly ranked among favorite activities.

Late 1945 saw the close of World War II, and the reluctance to spend money here at home was reversed. For almost a decade, all the nooks and crannies of the church and Wesley Hall had been overflowing from the Sunday School and various religious education programs. Four major capital improvements were undertaken: excavation and completion of a basement below the sanctuary; purchase and installation of a pipe organ; installation of a modern gas heating plant; and enlargement and improvement of the sanctuary. With these improvements, the 4th and Terry location served the needs of our congregation for most of another decade. Also during this time, a beautiful house on the corner of 4th and Pratt Street was purchased where we were able to provide a comfortable home for our ministers and their families. This house was sold in 1963 when another parsonage was purchased.
New Sermon Series Begins This Sunday
The Book of Psalms is often called the Scripture's songbook. Beginning this Sunday we will look at a variety of Psalms and see how they can speak to us today in the midst of the pandemic. Join us each Sunday on our YouTube channel at 10:00am!
On January 19, 2021, the Heart of Longmont bells rang in remembrance.
Thank you to Karen Moore for recording this video of the bells ringing.
Lenten Food Drive
March will be Heart of Longmont's designated month for food contributions to the OUR CENTER. Your United Methodist Women have come up with an idea that might make it easier and/or fun to add an item a day to a box for 30 days during LENT beginning on February 17th. Our Kiteley neighbors will once again be invited to participate as well. THEN, on March 19th, the last day, you can bring your box to the church between 1 and 3 PM. IF YOU CANNOT BRING YOUR BOX, please call Lynn Greenhalge at 303-651-3911 and we'll arrange to come get it. This is yet another way our congregation is putting more of God's love into the world.

Thank you for your support!

“Finding Peace in an Anxious World”
Hello HOL members—

If you have been asking where and what you can do to remain calm during this chaotic time in our lives, this may be the answer you are looking for. The UMC and UMW are presenting a mission u study for the whole church during the month of February, starting on Sunday Feb 7 and going through Feb 28. It will be on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 in the afternoon. You can even do this study before the Super Bowl starts on Feb 7 at 4:00!

Many from the church will be taking the course so I hope you join us too.

Questions? Email Marty Allison martyallisonco@gmail.com or Mary Ann Watson maw22744@gmail.com.
Join Rev. Su Debree for a virtual study that explores ways to discover peace through scriptural and spiritual disciplines.

This four-part study series will begin Sunday, Feb. 7 and run through Feb. 28, 2021. Each Sunday session will be offered via Zoom from 2pm to 4pm MST.

No cost to attend but you must register at mtnskyumw.org/events/mission-u/  Then a Zoom link will be sent to you.

Participants are encouraged to purchase the book Finding Peace in an Anxious World edited by Erin James-Brown and read it prior to the event. The book may be purchased at umwmissionresources.org or on Amazon. (If buying on Amazon, please order the book edited by Erin James-Brown. There is another book by same name, different author.)

The four study sessions use the book of Proverbs and “The Serenity Prayer” as a guide to help us find our way through anxiety, worry, and fear and move towards God’s peace that surpasses all understanding.

This class is sponsored by your Mission u Committee of the Mountain Sky United Methodist Women and is open to all men and women.
Student Care Packages
Each year our United Methodist Women like to remember students in our church family who are pursuing post high school training and undergraduate degrees with a care package. These packages are sent out in late February.

Parents: please submit your student’s name and address to Becky Vancura no later than February 10th. Contact Becky at: 720-771-7746 or becky.vancura@gmail.com
WHO IS OUR NEIGHBOR?
Several of us recently completed the Mountain Sky Conference series on racism and white entitlement. Given recent events in our country, we felt that we needed to continue the journey to educate ourselves.

In light of that we have asked leaders in Longmont to give a presentation on racial issues in our community. Points that will be addressed are:

  • What are the issues?
  • What divides us?
  • What steps have been taken in the past and what is planned for the future to bridge the racial divide?
  • What are the biggest concerns?
  • How can we as a church and as individuals take action toward positive changes?

The presentation will be held February 26 at 12:00PM. Watch this space for more information.
Save The Date!

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month
  • It is estimated that internationally there are between 20 million and 40 million people in modern slavery today.
  • Trafficking involves transporting someone into a situation of exploitation. This can include forced labor, marriage, prostitution, and organ removal. This kind of exploitation is known by a few different names -- “human trafficking,” “trafficking of persons,” and “modern slavery”.
  • Globally, an estimated 71% of enslaved people are women and girls, while men and boys account for 29%
  • Women and young girls are at a disproportionately higher risk of being trafficked, making up for around 99% of sex trafficking victims in 2016.
From its beginning, United Methodist Women has focused on ministries with women, children, and youth. Since 2013, UMW of The Heart has supported Free The Girls, an organization that exists to help women rescued from sex trafficking reintegrate into their communities.

Free The Girls is currently working in three countries: El Salvador, Mozambique, and Costa Rica. They collaborate with partners on-the-ground in those countries to encourage, equip, and empower girls and women to earn a safe income selling bras in the second-hand market. Their partners work closely to provide programming for holistic reintegration.

UMW of The Heart has sponsored several bra drives and provides a Drop-off Location where community members can drop off bras for donation. The total of bras we have collected, packaged, and delivered is well into the hundreds! Ever since the collection location has moved to the Chicago area, we are blessed to have our donations hand-delivered by Ray and Marty Allison thus, avoiding shipping costs!

Check your drawers, ladies, and any gently used bras or camisoles can be brought to the church and left in the tub in the Gallery.

And of course, please pray for all who are enslaved. The following is from the Pray page of freethegirls.org:

Even in the face of an overwhelming issue, we're inspired by the love of Christ to love people and fight for justice and wholeness for survivors of sex trafficking, regardless of the survivor's beliefs or religion. Our desire is to see a world where all are free.
We invite you to join us in praying for the brave survivors in our programs and their families. As well as the girls and women who are still trapped in slavery all over the world. Let's pray together "freedom for the captives", along with true freedom and true healing.

"To proclaim good news to the poor...to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners... " (Isaiah 61:1)

"Thank you...selling bras is so good because I'm earning money. We have to work as women so that we are not violated by men. We should have our income so we can sustain life, a life that everyone yearns to have."

"This project has made such a huge difference in my life and the lives of my children."

"Nobody could change my life. I needed to take the first steps."
