Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Hopefully by now you've heard the announcement that the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) will be hosting one of their 2020 fly-ins right here in San Marcos!

For those who have been around a few years, you'll recall that AOPA hosted their first-ever regional fly-in right here at HYI in 2014. Since then, we've been patiently waiting for them to return. And by patiently, I mean we called and emailed and sent courier pigeons every few months to remind them we were ready for their second visit.

Thankfully for us, they were intrigued by the Go Wheels Up (GWU) event last May and thought it might prove beneficial for them to join forces. While AOPA draws a large pilot crowd, partnering with GWU means they can reach the larger community - something that is a win/win for all parties involved.

Cory Morrow's Go Wheels Up Texas featuring AOPA Fly-In will be held May 29-30, 2020 so mark your calendars!

The event will combine GWU's signature airshows, concerts, and car show events with AOPA's fly-in, seminars, exhibits, short takeoff and landing (STOL) invitational, and nighttime drone show.

As you can imagine, there are many logistical components that need to be worked through and as things are solidified, we'll be sure to keep you all updated - especially related to taxiway and runway closures. Be sure to continue to read our monthly newsletters and check our Facebook page.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us directly. And in the meantime, check out this great video about the fly-in from AOPA Live: https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/january/pilot/fly-in-locations-2020.

Happy Flying,

EAA HOSTED SUCCESSFUL YOUNG EAGLES EVENT

On December 7, EAA Chapter 958 members flew 21 Young Eagles with 9 aircraft under gorgeous weather conditions. The event operated from the Commemorative Air Force hangar and ramp.  The most notable flight was the Li'l Angel Cessna 150, which flew its first Young Eagles event since its restoration led by Greg Hughes and EAA volunteers. Piloted by Mike Rice and Co-pilot Angel Gonzalez, both said the aircraft performed flawlessly.

Two simulators were  donated for our use during the event by Redbird Flight Simulations and were flown by students while they were awaiting their YE Flight.

Young Eagles and their parents were all quite pleased and their class instructors said they eagerly look forward to our next event.  Thanks to our pilots, ground crew, the CAF, and San Marcos ATC for their support.  We have tentatively scheduled our next Young Eagles event for April 4, 2020.

The San Marcos EAA Chapter, Chapter 958, meets every third Saturday at the San Marcos Regional Airport. For more information about the chapter and the upcoming Young Eagles event, email Young Eagles Coordinators  Matt Naylor  or  Dave Falleur  or visit the EAA website:   www.eaa.org/eaa .
