SUMMER 2018
Message from the Superintendent

Dear Hendrick Hudson Community,

While we all enjoy the  summer  weather and warmth, in only one short month the start of the school year will bring excitement and anticipation to the Hen Hud school community. Soon our fields will be full of athletes preparing for the upcoming season, and our hallways will be buzzing with staff decorating and preparing their classrooms and instructional spaces.

As we reach the halfway point of the summer and head toward the fall, we've been busy working to prepare the schools for our students on September 4. As always, we would like to extend a huge thank you for the diligent work of our maintenance staff, who have been working all summer on upkeep and improvements.

I would also like to commend the number of teachers who have and will continue to participate in various professional learning opportunities. While we may be on summer vacation, the commitment of our staff to perfecting their craft is ongoing and never ends.

Wishing you an enjoyable August, and I look forward to seeing our students on September 4.

Regards,
Joseph E. Hochreiter
Superintendent of Schools

Real Estate Expert Gives Local Market a Thumbs Up

Local realtor Don Dwyer recently sat down with Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter to share his impressions of the local real estate market.

Local realtor and Hen Hud parent Donald Dwyer summed things up this way: "People don't want to move; they are happy here."

Dwyer sat down recently with Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter to discuss the local housing market in the Hen Hud area, and the news he delivered was all good.

The discussion was a follow up to an earlier interview with Dwyer, in which he shared his knowledge and insight regarding Indian Point's planned closure and the concern many residents felt about the local housing market. Those worries proved unfounded at the time, as Dwyer demonstrated that the local market ws exceptionally robust.

In Dwyer's recent audio interview with the superintendent, he described the market in positive terms for sellers: low inventory and quick sales at high prices. "There is almost nothing hitting the market right now," he said. "It is the exact opposite of an exodus; we are experiencing demand over the entire Hen Hud area."

Summer Fun & Learning Around the District

Cooking and learning Spanish: a few scenes from Hen Hud's Summer Fun program.

Learning didn't stop over the summer for Hen Hud students. The district's Summer Fun program has kept students engaged, exploring and acquiring new skills, and the  Hen Hud Summer BookMobile is keeping our students reading all summer long.

The BookMobile visits local playgrounds around town, providing plenty of wonderful outdoor (and indoor) reading opportunities. Teachers are on hand at each BookMobile stop to assist students with their selections.

Summer Facilities Update

Summer paving work at Furnace Woods Elementary School.

Throughout the summer, the district has been making various upgrades and improvements to school buildings and grounds, as it readies facilities for the return of students in September.

Projects include paving at all five schools; painting of select classrooms and areas throughout the district; replacing floor tile in various buildings; security upgrades, such as updating locks and hardware, and installing new cameras at the high school; replacing the refuse enclosure at Buchanan-Verplanck ES; and updating the wall padding in the Furnace Woods and Frank G. Lindsey gymnasiums (done at Buchanan- Verplanck ES last year).

Leadership Week Shines a Light on Engagement and Empowerment

During Leadership Week, administrators and teacher leaders explored Question Formulation Technique with Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES' Gregory Brown, Ed.D.

Engaging students, helping them question effectively and creating dynamic, active learning spaces in existing classrooms were all on the agenda during the district's annual Leadership Week event, held on July 24, 25 and 26.

"This event takes place every summer and provides a unique opportunity for us to reflect on our successes, identify priorities for the coming year and work collaboratively," said Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter.

Deb Reed from Research for Better Teaching kicked off the three-day program by sharing ways to plan instruction that engages students. Using interactive activities, Reed  showed participants how to bring this practice to the classroom.

On the event's second day, Dr. Gregory Brown of Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES spoke about Question Formulation Technique. Brown said the ability to produce, improve and prioritize questions is a critical skill for students. By deliberately teaching questioning skills, he explained, teachers can help students develop the mental muscle necessary for deeper learning, creativity, innovation, analysis and problem solving.

On the final day of the event, MeTEOR Education joined staff from the high school's Academy program to discuss how to create active learning spaces using innovative layouts and furnishings. MeTEOR partnered with Academy teachers during the 2017-18 school year to improve student engagement through classroom design.

Jill Allshouse of MeTEOR walked participants through the process of "connecting the dots" between methods, tools, environment and relationships. Academy teacher and coordinator Scott Perlman co-facilitated the session, describing the Academy's journey in creating a dynamic learning environment for its students and how teachers can make the same transformation in their classrooms.
