A Message from Our CEO, Janet Van Dyke, DVM, DACVSMR.
We were very excited when our webinars on hot topics in rehabilitation and acupuncture sold out, so we will continue to offer them at least through the end of June. Go to Webinars for updates. More good news is that the recorded versions of all the webinars are now available in our CRI Member Library, which also includes many RACE-approved courses taught by our amazing faculty.
We have been busy converting our courses to hybrid versions so students can continue to learn even with all of the restrictions posed by the pandemic. This format includes pre-recorded lectures and live Zoom meetings. Any in-person labs sessions will be held later when it is safe for all involved. The response to the virtual Business of Canine Rehabilitation course was so positive that we plan to offer it again later this year. Our 7-week hybrid Introduction to Canine Rehabilitation will debut on June 4, and we are busy modifying Clinical Skills and Canine Rehabilitation Veterinary Nursing. If you are enrolled in any of these courses, you should have received an email from us.
We appreciate the patience and flexibility - even some enthusiasm! - you have shown as we work to provide you with the best education in rehabilitation and acupuncture, even during this challenging time.

All webinars use Zoom videoconferencing and are expected to be 50-60 minutes in length depending upon participation.

An Update on CRI Internships.
In light of the current social distancing policies, we want all of our current CCRT- and CCRVN-internship candidates and intern mentors to know that you should wait until all social distancing policies have been lifted before planning to schedule any internship. CRI is extending indefinitely our graduates' eligibility to complete an internship. Those who have internships currently scheduled should contact their mentor sites to confirm plans to defer internships to later dates.

In this online course, rehabilitation therapists learn to eliminate anxiety and fear so they are better able to localize injuries, address pain, and implement treatment plans. Therapeutic Exercise in Canine Rehabilitation! This course is tentatively scheduled for March 20-21, 2021, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and will be taught by CRI faculty member

The Therapeutic Exercise in Canine Rehabilitation course provides students with extensive understanding of how exercise affects tissue physiology. Students will learn to evaluate and apply appropriate exercises for different stages of healing and to progress exercises through the rehabilitation phase and into the return to activity phase. Detailed exercises programs are presented, demonstrated and practiced for in clinic and at home, relating to orthopedic, neurological, post operative, geriatric and canine athlete cases.

PT Students: You Can Now Register for Rehabilitation Certification Courses Before Completing Your Degree
Attention, physical therapists and PT students! You can now register for CRI courses during your final year in PT school and start your certification as a canine rehabilitation therapist as soon as you have graduated and are licensed! We will NO LONGER require that you graduate before registering for courses. This will allow you to achieve your dream of working with animals much sooner!
Physical therapy students can register for any courses that licensed physical therapists can take, but you cannot start the courses until you graduate and are licensed. To become certified as a CCRT, you must complete the three required courses plus a 40-hour internship. In addition, you must have completed one year of clinical experience in human physical therapy after receiving your PT license.

Veterinary Students: Have You Heard About the Changes to Our Rehabilitation and Acupuncture Certification Programs?
 We know that veterinary students that graduate with certifications in veterinary rehabilitation and/or acupuncture have more to offer a potential employer. But finances and school schedules can make this additional training very challenging. With this in mind, CRI has made adjustments to our rehabilitation and acupuncture certification programs just for veterinary students.
Certification in Canine Rehabilitation (CCRT): Students can start their training by taking
Introduction to Canine Rehabilitation any time after their first year. They can then take the second module,
Clinical Skills, any time after their second year. After their third year, they can take the last module,
Clinical Applications, followed by a 40-hour
internship. Certification will be awarded when the students obtain their veterinary licenses.
Certification in Veterinary Medical Acupuncture (CVAT): Students can start their training by taking
Introduction to Veterinary Medical Acupuncture any time after their first year. They can then take the second module,
Veterinary Medical Acupuncture for Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation Patients any time after their second year, and the last module,
Canine and Feline Medical Acupuncture, any time after their third year. Certification will be awarded when the students obtain their veterinary licenses.

Our Updated CCRT Curriculum Begins in 2020!
Starting January 1, 2020, the three modules for CCRT certification will be:
- Module 1: Introduction to Canine Rehabilitation. The content of this module will remain essentially the same. This is a 5-day course.
- Module 2: Clinical Skills (formerly called Canine Rehabilitation Therapist). Students will be introduced to clinical assessment, goal setting, treatment planning, and outcome measurement from a physical therapy perspective. This is a 5-day course.
- Module 3: Clinical Applications. This is a new hands-on course where students will be able to practice their evaluation skills, create assessments, and present treatment plans for all types of canine rehabilitation cases. This is a 3-day course.
- Internship: A 40-hour internship remains a requirement for CCRT certification.
These changes only apply to the CCRT certification program for veterinarians and physical therapists.

We've asked our colleagues at OrthoPets to share case studies with us as a way of providing more education about orthotics and prosthetics.

Benny is a two-year-old Great Dane with a congenital angular limb deformity of his right front leg due to early growth plate closure. He works with our wonderful Southern California Partner Clinic, Dr. Goulard at Paws on the Go. Benny's deformity resulted in many complications for him including muscle atrophy, tendon and ligament contracture, and resulting limb length discrepancy, that were already affecting him even as a young dog.
He was initially considered as a possible partial amputation and a custom prosthetic, but due to his unusual bony anatomy his team, in consultation with OrthoPets, instead opted to begin in June 2019 with an unusual "hybrid" carpus and paw orthosis that featured a prosthetic-style extension to add length to make up for the missing height from his contracture.
Benny loved his first device so much that he very quickly refused to walk without it on! The first device was so successful in helping Benny to weight bear and develop more muscle and function in the affected limb that he progressed by January 2020 to a more typical carpal device with no need for the height extension. We can't wait to see what Benny's next steps will be!
