The 2018 Vermont Collection is not a new line of fashionable flannel attire. Rather, it's a group of more than a dozen films with ties to Vermont being presented at the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF). Now in its fourth year, the festival opens August 23 and will screen close to 90 films over four days at several Middlebury venues.
Lloyd Komesar, festival producer, noted, "MNFF draws real strength from its commitment to showcasing the outstanding work of Vermont-based filmmakers or films that are Vermont-centric in their focus. And we share the enjoyment that our audiences feel when these films are presented."
The juried competition will screen a diverse array of features and shorts across all genres, selected by Artistic Director Jay Craven.
"We are proud to support and champion the impressive efforts of first and second-time filmmakers from around the world," said Craven. "It is a happy bonus that many of these filmmakers hail from our home state. These filmmakers' superior creativity and storytelling is evident in the caliber of filmmaking and their dedication to the craft."
The Arts Council classifieds page is bursting with calls for artists. From the "Art Saves Lives" photography exhibition to a new playwright competition and a request for videos about freedom, opportunities abound for creatives in a wide range of media.
The ads are also a rich source for arts administrators. There are currently four job openings listed, including a director of development and communications at CERF+ and a studio supervisor for a college in New Hampshire.

Artist Development Grants are available to artists at all stages of their career. They are designed to support activities that enhance mastery of a craft or develop business skills.
The FY2019 grant round just opened and applications will be accepted through August 15 for the first selection. Subsequent deadlines are November 15, 2018 and February 15, 2019.

Women speaking out in the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements made an opportunity to say what was real. They asked to be heard. The many social consequences included an arts response in Stowe. Three women curators compiled twenty-five portraits of women made by seventeen artists. They asked to be seen.
The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from theNational Endowment for the Arts, which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
