The first policy meeting will be held on August 7 at the ABI office. The Employment and Workforce Committee, chaired by Amy Larsen (United Equipment Accessories) will hear from experts at Iowa Workforce Development about potential changes to the unemployment system. The committee will also discuss workforce and human resource issues employers face in the workplace every day. The Workplace and Product Safety Committee will meet August 8 and provide feedback on how the workers' compensation law passed in 2017 is working and any issues members are facing with product safety, OSHA or workers' compensation. Chief Justice Seeks ABI Feedback about Iowa Business Specialty Court
In his weekly memo, ABI President Mike Ralston included a request for feedback about the Iowa Business Specialty Court. The specialty court was established in 2012 to expeditiously move business or complex commercial litigation through the court system. As of 2018, 57 cases have used the business court.
The court is considering a change in the criteria by which a case can move to the business court. The current criteria can be found
here
. The proposed change would allow one party (instead of all parties) to file an application to transfer the case to the business court. You can find more information
here.
Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady would like feedback from ABI members on this proposed change. If you have comments to share, please contact Molly Kottmeyer, counsel to the chief justice, at
[email protected]
or 515-348-4965.
IWD Seeks Feedback on Seasonal Employment
Iowa Workforce Development has distributed a survey to labor, construction and business organizations to gather feedback from employees about whether or not they work in a seasonal industry. ABI participated in a meeting last month where agency officials brought
this issue
forward. If you are interested in receiving the survey, please contact

Federal Spotlight: ABI Joins President Trump, Cabinet Officials in Peosta
Several ABI board members, along with Jessica Hyland and Brad Hartkopf of the public policy team, attended a workforce development roundtable at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta. The roundtable included President Trump, members of his cabinet, Gov. Reynolds and Congressman Blum. The event focused on an executive order the president signed a few weeks ago aimed at expanding apprenticeships and job training opportunities for American workers. The Trump administration is encouraging employers to sign a pledge to offer more opportunities for their employees to gain the skills, education and training they need to advance their careers and be successful in the modern economy.
Federal Spotlight: House Passes Repeal of Medical Device Tax
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 283-132 to rescind the medical device tax last week. H.R. 184 annuls the 2.3 percent excise tax set upon the domestic sales of medical devices. The bill received wide bipartisan support with 57 Democrats joining Republicans in pulling back the levy. All four of Iowa's Congressmen voted in favor of the legislation. It was created, in part, to help finance the Affordable Care Act. It went into effect in 2013, but was temporarily suspended in 2015 and is currently suspended until 2020. Both sides of the aisle have criticized the tax for harming innovation, hurting job growth and limiting sales. The bill faces an uncertain future in the U.S. Senate.
