Come and meet the UUCH Choir!
Wednesday, August 8, at 7:00 PM

Creative, musical & spiritual: The UUCH Choir welcomes the opportunity to embrace new choir members in our joy of singing together and ministering to the church. Check the evite list for a sign-up to bring food and drinks to share. We will be discussing how we will progress this year. UUCH T-Shirts for Sale!

The Social Justice and Care Committees will be taking orders for UUCH t-shirts in the Fellowship Hall after the Sunday service on August 5 and on future Sundays. We are sticking with the traditional yellow shirt color because we have made a name for ourselves as the "yellow shirt people" when we show up en masse at various gatherings around town to show our support for justice, equality, science, and other worthy causes.

UUCH member Frank Davies is making the shirts for us at his store, Logos Screen Printing, at 3806 Governors Drive. Thanks, Frank!

The shirts will sell for $10 for adults and $8 for children. Sizes are S, M, L, XL, and XXL for adults, and S, M, L, and XL in youth sizes. (An XL youth is the same size as a S adult.) Payment can be made by cash (exact change is appreciated) or check when you place your order. Make out your check to UUCH, and note "t-shirt" on memo line.

Order yours now!
Thank You
for Attending Public Screening

Faith in Action Alabama would like to thank you for attending the recent screening of the documentary Bail Trap: American Ransom. Your interest to learn more about the injustices of the bail system and curiosity to know about bail reform were evident by your presence and engagement. We hope you left with a burning desire to do more and are willing to come alongside Faith in Action Alabama as we continue to forge a new identity as a community of truth-telling, justice-seeking, freedom-fighting agents of social change, across race and faith lines to build and wield enough power to dismantle systemic racism at the local and state levels. This is the first in a series of public screenings we will be showing throughout the rest of the year. We hope you will join us as often as you can.

Call-to-Action: If you wish to donate to Operation Bail Out National Day of Action, scheduled for August 7th, please click here. Once you get to the  Checkout page, please type " Bail Out Huntsville" in the box that reads " Add additional note to merchant (optional)". Please remember to do this very important step.

If you wish to join Faith in Action Alabama, we would love to have you. We would be delighted to meet with you for a cup of coffee or tea to learn how we can begin to affect change together.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,
In peace, justice, and solidarity,

Stephanie R. Strong, M.A.

New UU Class
  August 12, 19, and 26

What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? Guided by the Tapestry of Faith Curriculum, we will offer a three-part series that explores important themes in UU congregational life: our worship and theology, history, covenant and polity, faith development, social justice, and membership. This program is particularly focused on introducing newcomers to Unitarian Universalism, but those of us who have been here for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition. Everyone is welcome!

Mark your calendars for the Sunday mornings of August 12, 19, and 26 for this chance to learn and share. Meet for coffee or tea at 9:00 a.m. Discussion starts at 9:15. Nancy Finley and Bobby Hall will facilitate the discussion. Contact Nancy Finley at  finleyn@uah.edu for more information.

If you need childcare during this time, please contact Nancy at least a week before the event.

STPShare the Plate

We Share the Plate* this month with
New Futures, Inc. , a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1990 that is addressing the need in Hunt sville and Madison County to serve homeless and intact families. New Futures Inc., operates the Marilyn Mabry Family Lodge, a homeless shelter that allows families to remain together in a safe, family-friendly environment. They are the only homeless tr ansitional housing program in Madison County that accepts families with children up to 18 years old of both genders, single fathers with minor children, and single mothers with sons over age 10. By keeping families together, the Lodge enhances the positive outcomes for all family members, and ultimately for the community of Madison County.

New Futures' shelter is dormitory style, with private rooms and shared bathrooms and common areas. Through its transitional housing program, New Futures acts as a catalyst for homeless families to obtain skills and education to empower themselves and overcome extreme poverty to achieve independence. Services include a Shelter Program (90-day program, including job preparation, job search assistance, and case management) and a Transitional Housing Program, which includes education services (including GED certificate assistance),  job placement, job coaching/resume-building classes, transportation, counseling, and daycare assistance. Care List

This Sunday, July 29, 2018,
at our Circle of Candles:

LaDawn Edwards  lit a candle of joy: I have had so much fun this summer participating in the Wednesday "Stole-a-thon" sewing circle. In some ways, it is even more fun than choir practice itself, since I can talk while ironing!

Torin Kyemba lit a candle of joy: Sophia's birthday was Saturday. Sophia is my sister. She is in Peterborough, NH, visiting grandparents. We have given her cards. My birthday was July 16. It was a while ago. We wrapped her presents down here, and they were what she asked for. When she gets home on Tuesday, she will find them. She is coming home soon.

Amanda Schuber  lit a candle of joy: Our daughter, Addie, celebrated her 8th birthday on Saturday. Also, my mother officially announced her retirement from VA in Tuscaloosa. She will live for a year in Tuscaloosa and then plans to relocate to the Huntsville area.

Nancy Finley and Becky Ellingwood  lit a candle of joy: That our daughter, Abby, is home from Hong Kong and attended church with us.

Social Justice and Care Committees  lit a candle of Joy: We are happy to announce that it is time to order your yellow UUCH t-shirts. See the sample, and order today in the fellowship hall. We UUs are lovingly known as the "yellow shirts".

Jack Long  lit a candle of joy and concern: My son, Cole, is up for Chief in the Navy and will find out in a few weeks. Good thought to move the military in his favor.

Kathy Fisher lit a candle of sorrow: My friend, Peggy Mansfield, is in the hospital with pneumonia and complications, right after she and Doak moved from Washington state to their new church in the Ft. Walton area. Please send them healing energy.
