K-2 sang to the Seniors on Wednesday. We sang Bill Oliver's Habitat, Habitat, Have to Have a Habitat; Tricky, Tricky Bear; and Harry Belafonte's Turn the World Around. 
3/4 News

Third graders had a special day on Wednesday while the fourth graders went to the Hood Museum. They had a math class focused on polygons and reviewed symmetry. We enjoyed snack together.  In reading class they listened to Bread and Jam for Frances by Russell Hoban. They also had an opportunity to free choice read. Many chose comic books! Third graders got to have quiet time after lunch, and many liked having some peace and quiet. We will have our first Hood trip on October 18th at 9:00 in the morning.

What a busy week we've had with the Hike for Hunger and various projects! Our kids are busy practicing and researching information for our upcoming play, titled 13 Colonies. All the students are expected to have memorized their lines by this coming Monday. They have also been singing those informative and catchy songs. Parents, please help you child with their lines. You can also hear all the songs in Google Classroom.  

Our performance day will be Thursday, November 7th.

Things have gotten real in the humanities, as our first full units are fully underway in each subject. In Social Studies, we're studying the origins of the American Revolution, focusing on the social conditions that led to the Declaration of Independence. In Literature, we've begun a unit on traditions, and the ways in which they affect people's lives. 

Science class is finishing our motion investigation, and are about to add another aspect of motion. 8th grade finished a math test (hooray!!) and are finished with the first chapter in our book. 7th grade is working on decimal fraction conversions and will have our first test next week to complete chapter one!

Britannica Schools

We have a new online resource for students to explore for research AND for fun! Britannica Schools has all of the information you'd expect to find in Encyclopedia Britannica, but also includes videos and images, an atlas, embedded dictionary, country comparing tool, and games! The site is leveled for different ages and reading abilities, from kindergarten to high school, and includes tools for saving, sorting, and sharing articles and other research sources.

We have collaborated with the other libraries from the White River Valley Supervisory Union to purchase this resource; if you would like the log in information, please contact Simone.

Hike for Hunger for a Hunger Free Vermont!

The Walk for Hunger, also known as Project Bread, is the oldest continual pledge walk in the country. It began in Massachusetts in 1969 to raise awareness and funds for hungry children and families.

Newton School began their own Hike for Hunger tradition to educate the Newton students and the community and to spread awareness about hunger issues in Vermont.  

Way to go Newton! We are so proud of you all!

Soccer Updates

K- 1/2 will host an optional scrimmage for parents and siblings on October 9 at 4 p.m. at the Field of Dreams as a fun way to prep for their first game on October 12 at 9:15 in South Royalton! Thetford Jamboree is October 19 with times TBD, followed by a home game on October 26 at 11 a.m. with potluck to follow.

The 3/4 team lost in a close match up against SoRo last week, 3-2. Next week, 3/4 takes on Sharon Elementary in Sharon at 5:30 on Tuesday, October 8. (Please do not park in the Seven Stars Parking Lot!) The 3/4 team battles First Branch in a rematch at the Field of Dreams on Thursday, October 10 at 5 p.m.

The 5/6 team had two hard fought games last week against Barnard and SoRo. Goalkeepers for 5/6 have been doing an excellent job for their team! Next week 5/6 takes on Sharon Elementary on Monday at 5:30 in Sharon. No practice on October 9 (no school).

Go Roadrunners! As always coaches request players arrive 20-30 minutes before game time.

There will be a Fall Sports Banquet to celebrate our Newton Athletes at the end of October. Stay-tuned for the date and time.

Parent Teacher Conferences

The PTA traditionally organizes food for the teachers to show how much we appreciate what they do for our students. We are asking you to help by contributing to a sandwich bar on Thursday, October 17 and afternoon snacks and desserts on Friday, October 18. You can sign up here.

5:00 - JACK-O-LANTERN CONTEST ON THE STEPS AT BARRETT HALL. Please have your pumpkins there by 5 pm. Winners announced after dinner at 6:45.

6:00-7:00 - ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER FUNDRAISER & HAUNTED HOUSE AT BARRETT HALL (Haunted House is FREE & generously created by Newton 8th graders & Parent Volunteers)
