Shelterbelt
Successful Completion
This project had an extremely succesful final year with well over 30 inscriptions/donations. Thank you for all the support over the years since its inception in 2005. The Shelterbelt garden will continue to be maintained by the volunteer gardeners of the Friends of the Farm.

New Selection of Photo Cards 
Featuring Botanical Artwork
The Friends have a new selection of six photo cards from Blooms: An Illustrated History of the Ornamental Gardens at Ottawa's Central Experimental Farm and six new greeting cards featuring
botanical and
ornamental artwork from Farm artists Faith Fyles and Arthur Kellet. The cards are $4 each or $20 for 6 and are only available to purchase at Bldg 72 Monday to Thursday from 9am to 2pm. They will also be available to purchase at the Friends' promotion table at
Art on the Farm, along with our book selection.

Dianne Dakers-Rayn
Long-time Friend of the Farm, Diana Dakers-Ryan died July 1 at the age of 88.
Diana became a Friends of the Farm volunteer in 1996 after retiring as an operating room nurse at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. She began on a gardening team, joined the craft group and was appointed to the Board of Directors to manage events, which she did for 15 years.
As well as planning and orchestrating each event, Diana took care of promotion and media contact. She loved to talk about the Farm, leading tours of various community groups around the site. She served as vice president of the Friends and was always keen to work in the gardens, most recently leading a rose team.
Through her tireless work for the Friends, she became known as "Mrs. Friends of the Farm." Later, when she married Peter Ryan, who added his energy and skills, we had our "Mrs. and Mr. Friends of the Farm."
Diana began the highly popular Victorian Tea 20 years ago and was always suitably dressed for the occasion. Peter was an avid volunteer with the Bytown Fire Brigade and in the photo here with Diana at a Victorian Tea, wears a vintage fireman's uniform.

Art on the Farm

Friends of the Farm's premier summer event
Art on the Farm
showcases local and regional artists. There isn't a more beautiful and peaceful setting in Ottawa than under the luxurious canopy of the Arboretum next to
Building 72 on the Central Experimental Farm. A wide range of original media is featured including watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings, photography, glass fusion and jewelry, wire works and stained glass, wood and leather, pottery and scroll saw art, and much more. Our membership director Deborah Higdon-LeBlond will be displaying her LEGO art including a minifig scale model of the Anne of Green Gables house. Please note these models will not be for sale.
The event is
FREE
to the public and runs from
10am to 4pm Saturday August 11
with a rain date on Sunday August 12 (10am to 4pm). New this year, a Tea Room will be available from 10:30am to 3:00pm in Building 72. The perfect place after browsing the art showcases to sip a cup of tea and chat with friends over home made baked goods. The tea will be $10 a person and individual baked goods will also be available for purchase.

ORDC Open House and Bug Day
Saturday September 8 from 9am to 4pm
Friends of the Farm volunteers will assist AAFC scientists in greeting the public at the ORDC Open House on the Central Experimental Farm. This is a free educational event open to the public, all ages are welcome. View research displays, scientific instruments and materials, talk to scientists about their research, visit the Vascular Plant Collection, take a greenhouse tour or horse-drawn wagon ride, watch horse-drawn ploughing contests, speak with experts and view specimens from Canada's world famous National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes, enjoy the specially planted wild pollinator garden and get tips for attracting them to your home garden, and see the beautifully restored Tropical Greenhouse.
Bug Day 2018 is also happening in the K.W. Neatby Building on the Central Experimental Farm. I

et tips on how to start your own bug collection, g
o on a bug collecting expedition, bet on your favourite to win in the always unpredictable cockroach races.
Visitors are encouraged to bring in interesting insects and let the knowledgeable team of bug experts identify them. The
Entomological Society of Ontario, the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are sponsoring Bug Day 2018.
Parking is free in the lots around the Research Greenhouses and the Neatby Building.

Master Gardener Lectures
The tradition
expands with new fall lectures!
Every year the Friends partner with the
Master Gardeners of Ottawa Carleton to offer timely and informative presentations.
NEW this fall - two added lectures!
All presentations are from 7pm to 9pm in
Building 72 just east of the Prince of Wales roundabout with free parking. Lectures can be
