I was recently reminded why we do this. This, being archery of course. It’s been a long hard year so far, with no let-up in sight, but I just got a break.
On the third of this month I packed all my stuff into the trailer and rode up to Jenks Lake with Sue for the annual Big Bear shoot. Thank you Cherry Valley Bowhunters!
After many months of working 7 days a week, with only a day or two stolen now and then to work at Oranco or to spend some time teaching children to shoot at Compton and Raahauges, it felt almost like work getting the trailer loaded and heading up the hill.
Then I got there, had Friday night dinner which was nice compared to other places, and sat down with old friends to begin to unwind. By the end of the day Saturday I started to realize that the enjoyment of a shoot has little if anything to do with actually shooting. For the most part I’m not all that good at it. The real enjoyment comes from spending time with old friends sitting around in a nice cool forest with plenty of ice cold drinks and snacks. I like snacks.
All in all, I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend. I would suggest that you all put this shoot on your calendar for next year. Those of you who would like to do this a bit sooner, can always go to the High Sierra shoot at Kern River Archers (just below the southwest end of Lake Isabella). That is another two day shoot, and it affords plenty of opportunities to make new friends, catch up with old friends, and to get away from current friends if that’s your thing.

I overheard a few Oranco members at the shoot mispronouncing the name of their own club. The club name comes from our beginnings in Orange County. That’s Orange county, not Oronge county. Maybe Or-an-co will work better as an example, but please, it’s our club, if we can’t pronounce it, how can we expect others to get it right.

Got some information that if your place that you hunt deer has a closures due to fire, weather or other condition you can exchange your deer tags in some cases. You have to go to the CDFW and search for
TAG EXCHANGE
. The fee will about $10.04 if you are lucky to get that exchange.

? The state of California are looking for men and women to become wildlife officers. To get information go to the CDFW Website.
When you are out hunting drink lots of water and stay HYDRATED. Good luck and keep a look out for fires.

Hi All!
Hope everyone is having a great end of summer! It’s still hot out there but I’ve been enjoying some cooler evenings at the range.
For those members that were unable to attend the Club Meeting in August, here are the goings-on highlights:
- The Practice Butts awning project is complete. Hope everyone is enjoying the additional shade!
- Look for additional repairs around the range at the tree stand and car bridge in the coming months.
- Did you know… Oranco collected fees to host the filming of a pharmaceutical commercial? Let us know if anyone spots the ad on TV.
- Work Party Updates: Raahauge’s Safari Day event volunteers will receive 2 work party credits. Also, you can volunteer to help a Board Member open the range to the public on a Sunday 8:30am – 2pm for work party credit. Reach out to Joe Dotterer (951-897-5685 or ob.pres@outlook.com) or other Board Members for more information.
- The State 900 shoot is coming up the weekend of Sept. 8-9. As of the club meeting, there was room for one more cub and youth on each day but don’t let that deter you - additional shooters will be placed on a stand-by list. If there is enough interest, we will also consider adding another weekend. Contact Chriss Bowles (951-757-4571 or ob.rangecaptain@outlook.com) for more info.
- Due to fires, if you can’t hunt the zone/area for which you purchased a tag, you may be eligible for a refund or exchange on your tag. Exchange fee is approximately $10. Check the CDFW website for details.
- In the spirit of fiscal responsibility and transparency, a committee was formed to review recent capital expenditures and to develop/recommend a procedure for authorizing capital expenditures in the future.
- Implementation of new membership requirements adopted in the By-laws will be postponed until January as the club updates our forms and procedures to support the changes.
- Oranco Board Member Don Reiter resigned as Tournament Chairman. We thank Don for his service to Oranco and hope to see him back in California and at Oranco soon!

Oranco Bowmen Archery Range
Occupying about 45 acres, Oranco Bowmen Archery Club is a NFAA certified 5-star range. This is the highest certification given by NFAA. We are the only range in Southern California with practice butts from 10-80 yards in 5-yard increments. If you need a place to "dial in" your bow, this is it!
Oranco also has two NFAA roving courses: Our Valley Course is a level 28-target course, consisting of 14 animal and 14 hunter paper targets. For those who desire a bit more of a physical challenge, our Mountain Course is a hilly 28-target course offering 14 Field targets and another set of 14 animal paper targets. The Layout changes occasionally.

We are open to the public on Sundays and during shoots. During these events it is much more difficult to track who is on range property, especially if people do not sign in at the office.

Big Bear Shoot
Every year on the first weekend of August, the Cherry Valley bowhunters hold their Big Bear Shoot. This year with more than 500 in attendance the campgrounds filled up early as the archers eagerly-await the 2-day event. A 1 arrow unmarked 3D venue with 60 targets total, 40 targets on Saturday and 20 targets Sunday. This is one of Southern California's premier 3D shoots, set in the big timber close to Jenks Lake. If you’ve never shot this event you're missing out! The Cherry Valley folks do a great job providing meals and setting up the shoot, on off time there's lots of clouts, games and even mini shoots like Last Man Standing. If you like raffles they have the biggest one in Southern California with tons of prizes, bow’s and rifles, archery accessories… you name it! This is a great place to bring the whole family for a weekend of camping and shooting archery in the cool mountains of Southern California during the hot summer! Oranco Bowmen were well-represented buy traditional and compound shooters alike.

A big shout out to Denice Person of the Oranco Bowmen & Santiago Park Archers!
Denice took 1st place at the Big Bear shoot in Female Adult Longbow at Jehks Lake this year and we couldn't be more excited for her. She shot a score of 254, beating her competition by a single point. Congratulations girl!

Torque Tuning Your Bow for Shooting Accuracy
In science, research is the most highly regarded way to capture evidence about a topic. However, research reveals information about something at a certain point in time, or among a specific sample. Many times, these testing variables change, for whatever reason, and past research can often be refuted by future testing. So, research can’t always be taken as bottom-line truth.

Should Bowhunter Education Be Required?
Bowhunter education is often synonymous with safety. When we think of bowhunting education, it’s easy to imagine an instructor demonstrating to a class how to properly handle a compound or crossbow. However, safety is just one small aspect of any bowhunting course. Quality instruction has the ability to not only make you a safer hunter, but also a better hunter.

Chasing Velvet – Week 4 – How to Prepare a Velvet Buck for the Taxidermist
We’re in the final days before the opportunity to punch an archery velvet buck tag kicks off. The Tennessee Velvet Buck Hunt is this weekend, and Kentucky’s archery opener follows in the first week of September. We’ve also got a few friends hunting out west that’ll be doing their best to punch a tag on a velvet buck this year. The bucks have filled out and are tightening up in their final weeks before stripping off their velvet. One question that’s continued to come up from a number of hunters planning to hunt velvet bucks for the first time revolves around the topic of how to prepare a velvet buck for the taxidermist. It’s one of those issues that a lot of hunters fail to consider before the deal is done. However, it’s an issue that you really better be prepared to handle correctly for best results when it comes to preparing your velvet buck for the trophy room.
