Dear Neighbors:

The state's 9-1-1 system received a much-needed tech overhaul...and the result is a new system where (in an emergency) you can text emergency services from your mobile device. Text-to-911 is part of the state's new Next Generation 9-1-1 Emergency Telecommunications System.

The more we search, the more interesting are the stories of the homeowners in Asylum Hill. Take for example Mervin Mathurin and his wife Maria MacDonald and their son Ryheem.

Volunteer of the Month

Officer Sid Palmieri

Traditionally we focus on efforts that are completely separate from any paid work that volunteers do, but this month's volunteer is nearly impossible to extract from his day job.

Ofc. Sid Palmieri is the Hartford Police Department's Asylum Hill Community Service Officer. This means that barring any emergencies, he is tasked with serving as the face of the Hartford Police Department in Asylum Hill.

Support a great cause, register to vote, and learn more about the November election!

The Leadership Greater Hartford (LGH) #MyHartMyVote Quest task force will be at events in your neighborhood this September! The #MyHartMyVote team is a nonpartisan group with a mission to inspire and activate civic engagement in the City of Hartford by increasing voter awareness, registration, and turnout. We want voting to be celebrated throughout the community and hope that you'll help to foster this community engagement!

Asylum Hill Back To School

Once again Asylum Hill is sending their children back to school. Preparations were everywhere, including the Asylum Hill Family Center's Jumpstart event August 21st followed by the West Middle School event at the Boys & Girls Club on the 22nd. There were other events as well at Grace Lutheran Church, all of them included backpacks, and all of them meant to encourage the children to be excited about this year's opportunity to learn and excel as well as to energize the parents to support the learning.

Pollinator Festival

On Saturday, Sept. 22 ^nd , from 10:00 am to 1:00pm Asylum Hill will host a very special, first of its kind festival. It will be one celebrating those bees, butterflies and birds that spend their lives spreading pollen from one flower to another and in the process sustain many of the fruits and vegetables that we rely on for our food.

Immanuel Congregational Church Blessing of the Animals

Once again Immanuel Congregational Church celebrated the blessing of animals, this year on the 4 ^th Sunday of August at an outdoor service.

Arts and Music on the Hill

Hartford Paint The City Mural for Asylum Hill

After a great deal of struggle and way more red tape than any one imagined, Asylum Hill will soon become the 10 ^th Neighborhood in Hartford to have a mural from the Hartford Paint The City program that was one of the Hartford Decides 2015 -16 winners.

The requirement that the mural be on Public Property was challenging, and took some time to determine. While Hartford High School was the original site selected, the details were never really agreed upon.
