Bishop Canevin High School | DECEMBER 2019
|
|
From Principal Michael Joyce
|
Greetings!
In this role I have had the privilege of meeting alumni who have great passion and fondness for our school. I have been fortunate enough to be included in both the 40th and 50th reunions that have recently taken place. When asked about the current state of Bishop Canevin my response has been that "60" looks pretty good on us! We have an amazing student body that is thriving in the classroom, community, stage and playing field. We have a building that is quickly becoming a 21st century educational environment that we can all be proud of, and a dedicated faculty that is second to none!
While the content of most Crusader Journals focuses on how our current students are living and enhancing Bishop Canevin's mission and reputation, I want to let our alumni and supporters know that our 60th anniversary is also a time for our current student body to understand and develop an appreciation for the students, faculty, staff, coaches, moderators and parents who came before us and created such a solid foundation upon which Bishop Canevin currently sits. Whether it be through Throwback Thursday
Instagram posts
, a re-creation of the famous class of 1972's
"Ladies on the Roof" picture
, or by providing the opportunity for current students to listen and learn from the experiences of graduates, our students understand the legacy and traditions of Bishop Canevin and are committed to writing their own chapters in our school's storied history.
Sincerely,
Michael Joyce
Principal

BC Students Donate Books to Our Lady of Grace
|
As part of
Mrs. Smith's
American Literature curriculum, all the sophomores individually compose and illustrate a children's comic book/EZ reader with a theme of the Christmas holiday season. For the fourth year in a row, the books were then donated to a local elementary school for their kindergarten/first graders to read and enjoy. This year, the books were donated to Our Lady of Grace School.
The Honors American Literature students also composed letters from Santa that were given to the preschool students enrolled in SS. Simon & Jude Early Childhood Center.

Two BC Students Presented at Medallion Ball
|
by
Theresa Skindzier
, The Leonid Staff Reporter
Seniors
Lilly Chabala
and
Olivia Fiore
were presented last month at the 56th Medallion Ball, benefiting St. Lucy’s Auxiliary to the Blind. Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus William J. Winter presided over the event, held at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Hotel ballroom, Downtown.
They each received a Joan of Arc medallion for doing a minimum of 150 hours of volunteer service. They were among a group of 131 other girls who volunteered a total of 23,339 hours.
The evening began with the entrance of the escorts in white tie and tails. Each candidate was then presented and afterwards joined her escort for the grand promenade and several waltzes.
In addition to all their volunteer work for Canevin and outside organizations, Chabala is a cast member of the spring musicals and a member of BC² and the Marching Band while Fiore is a cheerleader and member of the International Club and Crusaders for Justice. Chabala was escorted by Brett E. Nyman and Fiore’s escort was Jordan P. Nutter.
"I think the Medallion Ball is a very fulfilling award to receive," said Fiore. "I am happy that I did it because it was such a good experience."

Want to Support Bishop Canevin High School?
|
|
In this season of giving, we ask that you consider donating to one or both of our two fundraising priorities - the
Bishop Canevin Fund
and
Michael Maloney, '72 Fitness Center
.
|
|
|
Bishop Canevin Fund
Donations - of any amount - to the Bishop Canevin Fund gives us the ability to
improve educational programs
and
increase tuition assistance
. These two areas - quality and affordability - drive enrollment in a competitive marketplace. Your gift impacts Canevin’s growth, as these donations give students who otherwise would not be able to attend the financial support to do so.
|
|
|
|
New Fitness Center
Bishop Canevin has been given a very generous donation to create a Fitness Center in memory of
Michael Maloney, ’72
.
The lead gift covers nearly 60% of the $185,000 renovation, but additional donations and pledges are still needed to fully fund this important project that will directly benefit our students in so many positive ways.
